Ray Mears has been a long time favorite of mine when it comes to outdoor bushcraft skills & survival teaching. His teaching is clear & to the point. What he does may seem a bit easy, until you attempt it for the first time yourself. This is evidence that he is a seasoned practioner of bushcraft skills. His videos are top notch, & you'll be hard pressed to find anyone better to learn about bushcrafting from. If you can't afford the videos, get his Outdoor Survival Handbook. My husband who is into bushcrafting and survival skills loves Ray Mears. Def not the "bug-eating-jumping-off-a-cliff-naked" kind of a guy, but full of knowledge about how to best use your surroundings to your advantage in a life or death situation.

OK I loved it except due to lack of information I wound up buying two copies. "The Outdoor Survival Handbook" with the Colorado Mountains cover shot is the exact same book picture here "Ray Mears: Outdoor Survival Handbook" which I already owned. Wasted money I could have spent on another book. Having said that. nice book, fun read.

Revealing an absolute wealth of knowledge and experience Ray Mears provides clear step-by-step instructions in how to master an abundance of survival methods which can be approached by novices and pros alike. Ray Mears shows how to construct shelters from the elements suitable for virtually any time of the year and a variety of locations and environments. He approaches how to light a good fire in all types of weathers with the materials readily available in the wild, how to track & identify animals and other essential everyday skills needed to survive in the great outdoors. Ray also shows how to orienteer and map-read, and the correct way to use a compass. He also demonstrates how to make a variety of tools and equipment from naturally available materials eg., ropes, pots etc.. This is an essential volume for anyone interested in the outdoor life, not just for survival purposes. A basic knowledge would do none of us any harm and this book meets this need and those who require much more. An excellent purchase.

For a novice back woodsman this book wood have earned 5 stars, if anyone with outdoor experience should read this book it comes in around 3 stars. The book itself is an easy read, it holds your interest throughout. I'm sure undergoing the task of writing a book is a daunting task in itself, but I expected More from Ray Mears.

This is a brilliant book. It contains a vast wealth of information locked in seasonal sections. Simply open the book to correct season and using plentiful clear illustrations, it will teach you techniques specific to the time in the year and show you what to do and what you can use around you in the wild. Unlike other books which leave you searching for the rare bark of some tree with out telling you you are four months too late, this book is very interesting and informative. It comes highly recommended.

Its okay but 'Essential Bushcraft' by the same author is better organized & contains lots of colour photographs - this book only has black & white sketches

Won't change your life if your used to the bush but will for sure learn you a lot of nice tips. Would have been amazed to read it when I was young.

Das Buch von Ray Mears macht definitiv Lust, den Rucksack zu packen und in den Wald zu gehen. Man merkt dem Autor an, dass er gerne draußen unterwegs ist. Alleine schon die Einleitung und die schließenden Worte sind sehr bildreich geschrieben, man kann geradezu das Lagerfeuer knistern hören. Vieles ist aus Platzgründen recht knapp gehalten, die Beschreibungen sind jedoch sehr klar geschrieben und großteils anschaulich illustriert. Basiswissen wie die Wahl geeigneter Ausrüstung, Umgang mit Karte und Kompass, Messerpflege und vieles mehr wird ergänzt durch fortgeschrittene Bushcrafttechniken. Anders als in den meisten Büchern zum Thema gliedert der Autor das Buch nach Jahreszeiten. So befasst sich der Autor z.B. in verschiedenen Kapiteln mit Wasser und Feuer, geht dabei auf die besonderen jahreszeitlichen Anforderungen und Herausforderungen ein. Im Gegensatz zu vielen thematisch ähnlichen Büchern ist der Inhalt auf Mitteleuropa bezogen. Es werden keine anderen Klimazonen behandelt, auch das Jagen und Fallenstellen, was gerade in Büchern angloamerikanischer Herkunft hohen Stellenwert genießt, wird weitgehend ausgeklammert, da dies in Großbritannien - ebenso wie in Deutschland - natürlich nicht umsetzbar ist. Das Buch ist weniger für den "knallharten" Survivalfreak geschrieben, der mit nichts in der Wildnis überleben will / muss. Sondern vielmehr ist es ein Lehrbuch, welches Wissen für all jene vermittelt, die sich gerne in der Natur aufhalten. Nach der Lektüre dieses Buchs wird man den Wald mit anderen Augen betrachten; sehen, welche Ressourcen der Wald zur Verfügung stellt, die man vorher so nie gesehen hat. Dabei vermittelt der Autor stets den verantwortungsbewussten, schonenden Umgang mit der Ressource Wald / Natur.

Great book with helpful guidance for anyone just learning about nature and survival. Ray is the real deal and this book became my grandson’s favourite for camping trips with his dad. It’s t he one he took into school and shared with his friends and was so popular that it got damaged and I had to buy a second copy.

il mitico Ray qui in uno dei suoi tanti libri ,ci spiega molte cose utili per la vita outdoor. in inglese ma di facile comprensione e dotato comunque di molte immagini esplicative.utile sia per i consigli in esso contenuti , sia come ripasso per la lingua...;) consigliato prodotto e venditore.
