Can this ram be mixed with apple's pre-installed ram? I've read that crucial memory has not played well with apple ram in the past.

Yes, I am using this RAM for my 2017 27" 5k iMac. Just insert this RAM in the slots that the Apple RAM is currently in, and then insert the Apple RAM in the remaining slots. This ensures the newer and larger RAM modules are used first for better performance.

I will mention that depending on the version of your iMac you may not be able to exceed 32GB. 2017 models using the 3.4GHz i5 processor are limited to 32GB while the 3.5GHz and 3.8GHz models can reach 64GB.

Would someone please explain single and dual rank? Which one should we buy and will both work in our fancy new iMac 27 2017s?

The Crucial Community has an article...What is a memory rank. Wikipedia does too, look up memory rank. You can look at your Apple memory to see if it's single or dual ranked in case you want to strictly match the stock memory type. The Apple documentation mentions nothing about single or dual so it would appear that it doesn't matter. I purchased the dual ranked (16x2) and it is working just fine with the stock RAM (4x2).
