The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Omnibus

Alan Moore is my favorite writer, the book is great so no disappointment on that regard. Shipping from Amazon however has been disappointing me lately. Hardcovers are fine but on paperback covers this is not the first time my comics are delivered with torn and/or wrinkled pages. Last time I complained about shipment amazon didn't let me post my review, let's see if this time it goes through...

Moore crafts a fun and informed story using literary characters from famous Victorian era works. Can seem underwhelming at times, but it helps to remember how bonkers this would all be in 1898. Also, 'omnibus edition' is misleading as it suggests the whole story is included in this one book. Due to beef between Moore and DC, only volumes 1 &2 are collected here (along with a few other stories). The Black Dossier, volumes 3 &4, as well as a trilogy for Captain Nemo are all published elsewhere and are needed to really get the full scope of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and what Moore wanted to accomplish. If you're looking for a complete story, this omnibus edition alone will not satisfy you.

This is a collection covering roughly the move, and then another event I won't name to avoid giving away spoilers. First - if you expect the graphic novel to match the movie - you will be disappointed. It is, in my opinion, better, more adult, and grittier by far. Fans of Alan Moore will love this. The way literary characters, both fictional and real, are woven together into these wonderful fictional plots in such an interesting, semi-sgteampunk setting is worth the read!

It turns out this is a book about... you guessed it! Extraordinary gentlemen. It seems they formed a league? Some fellow named Alan Moore wrote it. This is the two, two, two books in one set! Remember the Wrigley's twins commercials? They had twins doing everything together! Riding bikes, walking their dogs, driving in cars (I guess they took turns driving) and more! Wasn't that awesome?! But I digress. This book is good and it's two books in one!

This edition includes the first 2 comic book story arcs and lots of extra material, some short novellas, variant covers... The art fits the setting and the artists employ some very clever tricks such as the framing of some scenes and the use of color throughout. So it's totally worth the money based on what is included in this edition of the book. I've been hyped to read this for years but after finally buying it, the actual story isn't all that, I might have built this up in my head to more than it actually is. The concept is genius, but I was actually disappointed in the execution, it isn't a masterpiece.

My 10 yr. old son absolutely loved this book. I told him a little about it, just enough to get his interest peaked and thats all it took. I ordered him Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, along with 20K leagues Under the Sea, H.G Wells the Time Machine, and the Ray Bradbury Stories... I hope these books will turn him from a life of video games into a lifelong reader. You can never go wrong with the classics, and so far we are off to a good start...

Alan Moore is widely considered the best writer in the comics industry, and I highly agree with that. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is not only a good read, but the artwork is also astounding. Kevin O'Neil and Alan Moore really bring the characters that we already know and love from classic literature to life in these graphic novels.

I have been wanting to read this for a very long time and was not disappointed. Love the story and the graphics! The Omnibus edition comes with great additions to the story, and was well worth the extra cost.

Alan Moore è probabilmente un genio del fumetto e della narrativa: l'idea di mettere assieme un gruppo di personaggi tratti dai romanzi vittoriani e farne delle spy-stories scientifiche alla H.G. Wells è davvero splendida. Le storie sono avvincenti e divertenti, con la difesa - sottintesa - di valori condivisibili come la diversità, l'umanità, la lealtà, il rispetto per la sofferenza. Inoltre, Moore chiaramente conosce alla perfezione i romanzi vittoriani e sa come raccontare le storie. I disegni sono belli, il montaggio delle vignette perfetto. Che poi gli "extraordinary gentlemen" siano capeggiati da una donna, Mina Murray, e siano più dei "freaks" che dei "gentlemen" nel senso classico del termine (Allan Quaterman ex-oppiomane, Dr. Jekyll che più spesso è un sanguinario Mr. Hyde, l'Uomo Invisibile che alla fine tradisce l'umanità, Capitano Nemo) e gli uomini di governo (ironicamente Campion Bond e Mycroft Holmes) siano doppiogiochisti e bugiardi, non fa che arricchire il valore di questa graphic novel.

Venant de la BD franco/belge, j'ai lu plein de bonne choses sur Alan Moore. Cette BD/comics est vraiment très bon. Pour les lecteurs dont l'anglais n'est pas la langue maternelle, l'écriture de Alan Moore, notamment dans ce livre, demande un relativement bon niveau d'anglais. Bonne lecture

Its a fantastic cross over between many classic literature characters and not only those seen in the movie. Imagine Gulliver with some kind of cosmic flying carpet from the thousand nights, some martians from Cs Lewis cosmic trilogy, the martians from Burrough's and John Carter fighting against the aliens from the War of the Worlds. Great content and length. Wonderful illustrations.

Nunca me diverti tanto com um livro! Demorei muito tempo pra comprar logo essa versão americana porque o volume 2 foi lançado pela Devir há muito tempo e se tornou uma raridade hoje em dia. O volume 1 eu já tinha lido da Panini (que também se tornou uma raridade já que a editora não tem planos para tratar essa relíquia), mas nunca concluí o começo das aventuras da Liga. Essa versão americana, apesar de ser capa comum, está recheada de extras e curiosidades. Além de conter muitas histórias imaginadas pelo próprio Moore dos heróis citados. O preço está bem camarada pra uma aventura tão gostosa de ler. Eu li todo esse livro numa tarde e recomendo. É uma das melhores obras de Moore. Vintage Moore, pra quem conhece. Pra dar um resumão sem spoilers, a Agência Militar Britânica, dirigida por ninguém menos que o mundialmente famoso Professor de Matemática James Moriarty, sim, o próprio nêmesis do Sherlock Holmes, resolve reunir um grupo de esquisitões e foras-da-lei para lidar com um problema que ameaça arremessar Londres em uma guerra civil. O lado Oeste versus o Este. O senhor Campion Bond é encarregado desta tarefa e como primeira da lista está a senhorita Wilhelmina Murray, recentemente divorciada e envolvida em certos escândalos que você deve lembrar porque envolvem um certo vampiro aí. E então, ela sai em busca do infame Capitão Nemo, dono do submarino Nautilus, o aventureiro viciado em drogas Allan Quatermain, um doutor que, ao ficar irritado, se transforma numa criatura bestial; Dr. Jenkyll.
