Chalkola 36 Watercolor Paint Set for Adults, Kids & Professional Artists

This is really a nice set of watercolors. I am so glad I got I was thinking about it for a while. I make personalized cards and some art and they are really nice and you have the shimmer and the flat colors. All in all a great gift for the artist in your family /)

I’m new to watercolor and taking a class. So I wanted to purchase something inexpensive in case I didn’t like it. This came with everything and is filled with quality items – my professionally trained teacher agreed! She mentioned its deep color saturation cheaper paints lack. Hardest part is having too many colors to choose from. if you like multiple colors that you don’t want to mix yourself, this is a super deal!

This is a fun watercolor set with a wide range of colors and plenty to experiment with. The 64 tubes give a lot of variety for mixing and trying different palettes, which makes it appealing for both practice and more involved projects. I like that the set includes brushes, making it feel ready to use right away. The paints have good vibrancy, blend nicely, and offer a lot of room for play, washes, and layering. Nice set for beginners wanting a broad color range, but also enjoyable for anyone who likes having lots of shades to work from. Feels like an invitation to sit down and make something.

Tube watercolors are new to me. So the only use with these is having made the color chart. Some of the tubes had thicker paint than the others. I assume not an issue as likely adding water to them before use anyway. I hope it’s not an indication of paint starting to age and dry out. Good assortment of shades. Color pallet a nice addition. Overall I give it a 9 of 10.

This is a review for: Chalkola Professional Watercolor Paint Set - 48 Semi Moist Water Colors Paint Adult Set, XL Pans | With Painting Brushes, Water Color Pad & Art Supplies | Suitable for Adults, Kids, Beginner & Artists, $49.95 at time of writing. This watercolour paint set features 48 semi-moist watercolours in extra-large pans, an 8 pack of paint brushes, 2 water brushes, a pencil, a kneaded eraser, a black acrylic marker, a swatch sheet, and a 20 page watercolour pad. The colours that this set includes are quite pretty! I have included swatches of all of them on the included swatch sheet and separately on black paper. The black sides of the swatch sheet were hydrophobic, I'm assuming because of the toner used, so I found the swatches on those sides weren't accurate. Luckily I had some black kraft paper around and did separate swatches on there. I used a chalk marker by the same brand to write the names of the colours. This set includes 30 "basic" colours, 8 metallic colours, 6 fluorescent colours, and 4 iridescent colours, covering a nice range of colours; some bright, some natural, and some more subdued. The paints are semi-moist, so they don't need activation with a lot of water like dry pans do. Just a little spritz is more than enough to activate the paints. The variation in colour with the addition of more or less water is quite varied and looks as expected. The pans are quite large. They're easily twice the size of a usual square pan. I was hoping the pans would have the colour names on the sides or bottoms, but they do not. They can be easily taken out of the kit if you want to take a few in a travel kit, but there is no easy way to bring them all to paint on the go unless you bring the whole box. I've found it easiest to keep the paints in the box while not in use. Each tray has a thick plastic cover, but they are pretty big to leave out. The pencil is as expected. It's a standard pencil. The black acrylic marker is really nice. It has a fine tip and activates like a paint marker. The black it produces isn't like a marker black but more like a true black. The water brushes are a lot like Tombow's water brushes - one is pointed (brush tip) and the other is flat. They are very handy for painting while not at home. They clean easily with squeezing the barrel and wiping on paper towel or a paint cloth, squeezing to get water also works to water down or activate the paint. The included brushes work well so far. The brushes included are 3 flat brushes (sizes 8, 5, and 3), 2 filbert brushes (sizes 7 and 4), 2 detail round brushes (sizes 7, 3, and 1), and 2 flat angle brushes (sizes 6 and 3). There is a nice variety of brush styles and sizes to work with. The bristles have some give but aren't flimsy. The bristles all move together and so far, no strays or shedding. They hold a lot of water and paint. The watercolour pad has 300gsm paper and is 8.5" x 9.25". It is a nice size of paper to work with, especially as a beginner. It's not like a daunting task to fill the paper with your painting, and even if say the edges are damp, you can still paint in the middle without awkwardly trying to avoid the edges. I've been keeping the paper in the booklet and have had minimal buckling. I usually stay around 0.5" - 1" away from the edges, so they stay fairly flat. I don't have a lot of experience with watercolour paper, so I did a painting with my daughter's watercolour paper, which is also 300gsm, and a bit of a different size (9.5" x 7") and it was pretty expensive. Aside from maybe a bit of difference with the grain (it felt a bit different, but visually they were very alike), I didn't notice any difference in performance. I don't have enough experience with watercolour paints, paper, and brushes to speak to whether this set is artist or professional grade, but overall, I was very impressed with the quality of all of the items. The paints are nice and smooth and are beautifully coloured, and the paper and brushes are nice to paint with. I would suggest this kit for anyone who wants to venture into watercolour without a massive financial commitment.
