David Morris - Feline Behavior Therapist No Animals were harmed or distressed in the making of this film. .com Television for cats may sound like the silliest idea ever, but when you turn on Feline Frolics your cat will stare with rapt predatory attention, staring far more alertly than your average couch potato. This odd little video features birds, fish, mice, rabbits, bumblebees, a plastic ball on a string, other cats, and a small blue square that bounces around the edges of the screen like a refugee from Pong, accompanied by a soundtrack of largely disconnected natural sounds--quacking, trilling, whining, gulping, panting, purring, even a lion roaring (there's also an alternative musical soundtrack, but this made no impression whatsoever on my cat; she didn't look at the screen until chirping caught her ear). Some cats my find this endlessly engaging, but with mine, the fascination only lasted for 10 to 12 minutes, after which she became bored (possibly by the lack of smell or other sensory stimuli) and sauntered off. My cat occasionally glanced at a bird fluttering across the screen after that but was far more interested with the world outside the living room window. --Bret Fetzer

I'm not impressed, but the cat seems to enjoy it.
I always thought these kind of things were silly because my cats could generally entertain themselves and had plenty of window perches from which to watch real, live birds and squirrels. But, I gave in and bought this after my 4 year old cat had surgery and couldn't haul himself up to a perch or get much satisfaction out of playing (darn cone of shame ruins everything). He's never been interested in the TV before, but I wiggled a toy in front of him then up in front of the screen. In a matter of seconds, his gaze was transfixed on the bird on the screen instead of the toy, and he didn't budge for the next hour. The extent of my 14 year old cat's interest was to stand up and inspect the screen for about 30 seconds then wander away. He has not returned for any subsequent viewings.*SMALL WARNING* Our TV is on a low stand, and every once in a while, the cat will get riled up by something and swat at the screen. He hasn't managed to knock anything over yet, but I would not leave him unattended with the TV set up this way. If you have a similar set-up, take heed!Unlike some others, I prefer this soundtrack to animal sounds. It is an odd mix of classical, ambient new age, guitar solos, and Japanese (?) instrumental music, but it's inoffensive enough that I can "tune it out" but be aware the video is still going. And, since I work from home, I'd much rather listen to this than have to feel like I'm working from the back room of a pet store. I really don't think the cat cares about the soundtrack at all. Would he like other animal sounds? Maybe, but he likes the video just fine anyway, so who cares? The video quality is quite poor. I realize this is only SD (Standard Definition), but it is just plain out of focus at points; it's not just a matter of resolution. On a smaller screen, like a laptop or Kindle, it might be better. Between the blurry images and how close the cat sits, staring up at the screen, I'm actually reminded a bit of my childhood. Sometimes I'm temped to holler at him not to sit so close, that he'll ruin his eyes, but I doubt he'd listen anyway. If this were a video for human entertainment, I would ticked off and demand my measly refund. But, the cat doesn't seem to mind the low resolution or fuzziness, and since the video cost less than a latte, I'm not mad - just not real impressed.

Entertaining for both you and your Kitty!
We have three kitties and of the three one watches TV from time to time when certain shows are on or something from the outdoors catches her eye. I thought I'd try out a DVD made specifically for cats and see if the other two would be as interested as our first. I came across this DVD from Feline Frolics at Amazon. When you put the DVD in your player, the main menu gives you two options for playing back the kitty movie, with music or with natural sounds. I thought it made more sense to try out the natural sounds first, so off we went. The video coverage is great and the closeups are fun for our cats. The audio is both good and bad. The good part of it is that it attracts a cat's interest, which is then kept (at least for our cats) with the video footage. The not-so-good part of the audio is sometimes the audio can spook a cat with odd or loud sounds that they have not heard before. Not to mention often the audio has nothing to do with the video which I think should be exactly what is on the screen. Here's what I mean. There is a scene of fish swimming in a fish tank and the audio is of whales. Other times there are sounds of cats hissing, dogs drinking from a water bowl and sounds from a jungle. If the audio matched the video, I would gladly give this DVD 5 stars, but as it is right now, I can not.It also would be nice if the video footage would remain on a certain subject just a little longer. The scenes change (at times) too quickly.Aside from those two challenges, the DVD is well made, full of wildlife and cat toys bouncing around. You will probably find it fun to watch with your kitty (or kitties). There were several times that our cats would circle the TV trying to find a bird to see where these crazy new sounds are coming from and where the bird or other animal had gone too.Entertaining for all!

Depends on your cat.....My cat loved this
I have played this for my cat a couple of times. I put my kindle close to her and determine her likes and interests. This is composed of: birds (flying, parakeets in a,cage), fish, rabbits, mice, dogs, playing with a string, dogs and many more creatures. There is a black square that moves around the whole screen.I was amused at my cat's reaction. She was interested for the most part with the rodents, birds and rabbit. The fish sequences are sometimes too long, I saw,my cat looking away. She also could care less about the dog clips. Most of the clips are repeated throughout. The sounds consisted of swishing water and new age type music. Before you purchase, you have to figure out your cat's interest in watching a video. One way I discovered this was by playing "Two Talking Cats" on YouTube. This video had well over 1 million hits. My cat sat there and watched this video with a keen interest. Some cat's have no interest in watching something on tv or in their face. Experiment with all the cat videos on YouTube. When my cat was falling asleep with the fish clip, I fast forwarded it to the mouse clip. The key is to know your cat. Do they tend to look.at things on the tv?I enjoy watching my cat sit perfectly still for 10 minutes or more engrossed in what she sees. My cat also will watch Cats 101 and Too Cute. All in all, a good source of entertainment for my kitty!
