No string, just the chem light. It does have a hook/loop at the end by which you can hang or tie it to a cord or rope.

The yellow ones I recently bought are very dim & not nearly as bright as the long-expired ones I still keep. Is that so for all new ones now?

I'm sorry , mine are old as well. I have noticed reduced quality in nearly everything I buy.
