Typical Victorinox - excellent quality and design!
I've carried Victorinox knives since my teenage years, and that was twenty-five years ago. Started with the monstrous "Champ" 70+ function knife, which rode in a belt pouch and was WAY more than anyone needs for daily carry and use, but it did let me try out most of the functions and find which were my bare necessities. I've gone through two or three since then, all of a similar size to the Pioneer, and my only issue I've ever had has been the eventual loosening of the trademark red scales. I probably should have investigated warranty replacement, but each time the handle scales came loose I decided to try a slightly different model. With the Alox scales, this one looks to be a lifetime purchase. The Alox Pioneer does away with the tweezers and toothpick of the red plastic handle versions. I won't miss either of these. The tweezers might have worked to remove the occasional splinter, but for most other fine work they were not, in my opinion, worth the effort of inclusion. The toothpick, after riding in a pocket and collecting whatever gunk the knife was near, could not be a sanitary option for its purpose! The only reason I wouldn't trash these two items out of hand was the unsightly holes left without them. The blade is typical Victorinox - SHARP out of the box! I mean arm-hair-shaving sharp! I will likely get more use out of the reamer blade than the small blade my other knives offered. And the cap lifter and can opener are old friends - with large and small flathead screwdrivers (and the small can do a good job on most normal-sized Phillips-head screws!) I could, honestly, take or leave the key ring, but it's there. Lockup on all blades is solid, I no longer have any of my old SAK's for comparison, but the mechanism on this one seems stronger. I can agree with other reviewers who observe the main blade seems thicker on the Alox knife than on the red plastic ones, and this one is definitely slimmer. Good grip with the textured handles.

One of my favorite knives!
This is my first Victorinox with alox scales, and wow, is it ever awesome! It's 93mm, so it's just a hair longer than a standard Victorinox. All of the tools are a bit bigger and beefier. I'm most impressed with the awl, as it's way more effective and easier to use than the other side-mounted Victorinox awls. I don't miss the scale tools, such as the tweezers or toothpick, or the tools on the back of other models, like the corkscrew or screwdriver, because I usually pair the Pioneer with a Victorinox Minichamp on my keychain and also with a Victorinox Camper or Spartan in one of my other pockets. A bit redundant, yes, but I love Victorinox! :-) The Pioneer looks built to last and is quite elegant. More and more I want a knife that doesn't look tactical, mostly because I don't want to attract unwanted attention or scare people, but also because I simply have no use for tactical knives living a normal existence in a big city. The Pioneer is perfect for EDC in the city and also for outdoor adventuring, such as camping, backpacking, or hiking. The back springs are quite strong, which is a good thing! It's not so good for my thumbnails, however. I've torn them to bits opening and closing the various tools on the Pioneer since I received it. The Pioneer is a great value for such a high quality multi tool. It will last forever, take a beating, look great, and not put a huge dent in your wallet! Very highly recommended!

An iconic pocketknife
Basically, the Victorinox Pioneer is the civilian version of one of the world's most famed pocketknives, the Swiss Army Soldier's Knife. Differing only in the addition of a keychain mount ( IMHO worthwhile), this is the ultimate refinement of the original four blader issued to Swiss army recruits from 1891 to 2008. Its pattern has been copied almost exactly by many cutlery manufacturer to produce Scout knives, US Army "demo" knives, and numerous others, all clones of the original but none better or even equal in quality. It differs from the more familiar version SAKs with red plastic handles containing toothpick and tweezer ( (Suisse Officiers model) by its hardened aluminum (alox) handle without the extra implements. This makes the knife thinner, also tough as nails. Plastic can chip or break, alox does not. The Pioneer, like all Victorinox products, is extremely well crafted, easily one of the finest knives you can buy at any price, let alone one this affordable. The blade shape is just about perfect for a utility knife, flat ground of a steel that holds a decent edge and is easily re-sharpened. The can opener is effective and the small screw driver on its end doubles as a phillips head driver, not best at that, especially for countersunk screws, but mostly workable. The awl is one of the most useful implements on the Pioneer, good for drilling wood screw guide holes, adjusting leather belts, opening packages, reaming out corroded pipes and more. Uses are limited only by imagination. The Pioneer is a good choice as an only knife and indispensable in a collection, both a capable and iconic masterpiece.

Greatest knife ever created
This is the greatest knife ever created. It's the perfect balance between giving you the tools you need and none of the extras you don't. The metal sides keep it slim enough to carry in your pocket, but it's still large enough to be able to get a firm grip on it.

Fantastic!
This is a great knife. It's not too big nor too small (about 3.5" long closed, and a shade over 6" long with the main blade opened). It arrived with the blade honed to a fine edge and ready for action. I've owned a couple other Victorinox SA knives in the past, and found them a bit bulky to carry because of all the tools that were crammed inside (does anyone ever actually use the corkscrew that is standard equipment on some models?), but this guy is nice and slim and drops easily into a jeans pocket. The various blades/tools are easily opened, and although they don't actually "lock" into place when opened, there is a definite snap or click upon opening and it requires firm pressure to start the closing process, so you know the blade isn't going to fold up on you while you're using it. It shows the typically great Swiss Army craftsmanship all over. I do sort of wish it had a pocket clip, but I'm not going to downgrade my review on that account because I knew what the features were when I bought it. Bottom line: This is a great pocket knife, and I'll probably buy more of them to give as gifts.

Best in class
What can I say? It's a Swiss Army knife! Best in class, hands down. I replaced one my Father gave me 45 years ago. Lost it.

A very handy/useful everyday carry
I have had many Swiss army knives, but the one I always come back to for overall usefulness and reliability is the Pioneer. The knife is the almost the same as that issued by the Swiss Army to their soldiers (the Soldier knife) from 1960 until 2008, except for the ring at one end to allow attachment to a key chain. It has Alox handles with a ribbing to add to the ease of gripping it even when conditions are adverse. There are only four blades: major cutting blade, large flat screw driver/bottle cap opener, can opener/small screw driver (that could be used for Phillip screws), and a very useful awl. The main blade takes and hold a sharp edge. It is large enough to give you the sturdiness to enable a firm cut. The can opener design is one of the best I've ever seen on a pocket knife. It is quick, easy to use, and leaves a smooth edge. The large screw driver/bottle cap opener can open half way to give you extra torque when loosening or tightening a screw which at times helps with that stubborn screw.. The awl is very use full, it it is quick and being on the end of the knife and not protruding from the middle of the handle allows you to work in any space you can fit your hand. It is very user friendly. The size of the handle gives you plenty of "heft" when you need it and is not bulky because of any additional blades. I would recommend this knife over most of the other Swiss Army models for every day carry, it contains 99% of the tools you would use on any given day. It is sturdy and you can use it in almost any task you need to use a knife. The cutting blade is less than three inches and does not lock so it should be legal to carry where ever you can still carry a knife. It fits well into the pocket. I would also suggest you use Amazon to purchase you knife, the service and customer care of Amazon is second to done.

Kicka$$ EDC Option!
For a small, lightweight EDC option, consider the Victorinox Pioneer. It's 3.5" long, 3/8" wide, and 7/8" tall where the knife back protrudes. Knife: The main blade is 2.5" long and comes sharp out of box. After a few passes on my Spyderco Sharpmaker, it's hair-shaving sharp! The slipjoint lock is firm and holds the knife without any movement. Also, Victorinox is a familiar brand so when you whip this out in public, people are less intimidated than if you pull out a dedicated knife. For most people, a SAK screams tool whereas a knife screams "weapon". The 2.5" blade is perfect for my EDC needs (along with a larger tactical blade) and I find anything larger to be a little cumbersome. Can Opener: The can opener is good, but like any multitool can opener it's much slower than a traditional crank one. Compared to the opener on other brands, I think that Victorinox is one of the best. Also, the tip doubles as a small flathead screwdriver. Awl: This is mainly why I chose the Pioneer over the Cadet. The awl is great for punching holes in fabric, leather, or thin metal. It can also be used to drill small holes in wood. It comes, surprisingly, sharp enough to slice through paper with a little effort. I think it's a great tool. Flathead/Bottle Opener: The flathead/bottle opener is unique inits opening. It locks in place with the slipjoint lock at 180 degrees, but also at 90 degrees. This gives you an added capability in tightening screws. This piece feels very solid and I have used it successfully for medium-duty prying tasks. The bottle opener is decent when compared to dedicated bottle openers, but good in the realm of SAK style bottle openers. Alox Handles: The alox handles are thin and beautiful; much more streamlined and durable than the cheap plastic ones. there is a keyring on one end and on the back there's a little place to inscribe your name. Carryability: If you're thinking about throwing this on your keychain with your car keys, keep in mind that it's fairly large. I think that it would be a little cumbersome there and a SAK Cadet may better suit you. You can add a lanyard to it and carry it floating in your pocket if you like, but personally I don't like things floating around in my pocket. I have this on a mini survival keychain along with a Fenix E01, a firesteel, and a pill tube with iodine tabs. Since it sits in a pouch on my canteen, carryability is not an issue. Previously I had this riding in the little coin pocket on my jeans and my shorts, and it fit perfectly there without any movement. Bottom Line: Although I use this on a mini survival keychain, I'd recommend as an EDC option as well. It has a great variety of tools that provide with you with a lot of capabilities. For $25, this is a great deal; I'd buy one again without any second thoughts.

An Elegant no-nonsense EDC multi-tool!!!
I love knives!! Got a small collection of them and carry a CRKT Drifter pocket knife everyday(as a tool, not a weapon). This is my first Swiss Army Knife and I definitely love it!!! The dimension (with all tools closed) are: Length: ~93mm Width: ~23mm Thickness: ~11mm The quality is absolutely brilliant. The tools that we get are: 1. a plain edge blade (length: ~64mm or ~2.5inches) 2. a can opener cum Philips head screw driver 3. a bottle opener cum a flat head screw driver cum a wire stripper 4. an awl/reamer (For punching holes in leather, wood etc.) There are no tweezers or tooth pick or corkscrew that we normally see on most SAK's. This is a no-nonsense tool with only those tools which u are going to need day in and day out. So it's pretty lightweight and handy compared to the other models. (Which is exactly what I wanted) The tools are of great quality and have already used everyone of them. This blade was hair shaving sharp out of the box and cuts like a dream. The screw drivers handle most of the screws we see around. The awl is a real useful tool as well... Another major feature that makes this an absolute winner are the Alox scales. That is Aluminium oxide. Looks far better than any plastic scales and also makes this tool tough as hell. The Victorinox Pioneer is essentially a civilian version of the Victorinox 93mm Soldier's Knife designed in 1961, featuring the same tools and construction. Imagine carrying a tool that has been used for such a long time!! Goes to show how good the design is. The downsides (If you want to call them that) might be: 1. That it has no pocket clip. (I haven't seen an SAK model that does). So when you put it in your jeans pocket it tends to sink to the bottom and one has to search for it. I have solved this problem by adding a self-made lanyard onto the keyring. 2. The blade does NOT lock in the open position. so one needs to be careful while using it as it might accidentally close on your fingers. (Again I wanted a non-locking blade since I already carry a knife with a lock blade on me) Who should go for this tool? Anyone who's looking for a handy light weight EDC tool and use for routine everyday tasks like cutting an apple or opening boxes or tightening some random screws around home or workplace would love this baby. Cheers!! :)

Victorinox - Das Schweizer Messer
