It would be easy to paint; the surface is slightly porous, not sealed. It even looks like a small pew. Cute idea!

Yes, it easily handles 11-inch tall books. Mine is full of several of that size.

Q: How deep is the shelf? I have some 9 inch cookbooks to store.

Fits all my cookbooks. I do have a binder ( 10 x 12 ) that doesn't fit as well, but that is because I have this sitting under a cupboard.
