Very well-made projection lens attachment that adds a ton of texture to video
I have used these types of lens for years, starting decades ago with Dedolights. They were awesome and expensive, and all we could afford was a 150w fixture with the projection attachment, but it was awesome in interview settings. For stage lighting, we used Source 4s and occasionally would take them in the field for a nice sun-like pattern. This Aputure projection lens brings these optics and technology to today's prevalent Bowens-mount lighting fixtures. We also have the Nanlite larger projector which costs $599. Both work great, and on identical instruments, we notice the Nanlite is about 1/3 of a stop brighter, and is also smaller and lighter (which are pluses). Optically, both lens projectors look similar and do a great job. It's amazing to be able to put this lens projector on many lights in our kit, from an 80w to a 650w. Because these adaptors increase the output of the instrument, we 80w is often all we need.We have a couple of LED Bi-color & RGB COB instruments, and for some reason, these lens projectors do not work well on these lights. Instead of smooth gradation from light areas of shadowy ones, the RGB units project an almost pixelated gradation that looks fake.People use these lens projectors to throw tight circles of light (usually through haze) which is a very impressive dramatic effect. We use them mostly to throw dappled, defocused patterns on background walls. Because this is the primary use, we bought 36 degree adaptor, whereas the 19 degree adaptor is better at creating tighter circles of light. We like both the Nanlite and the Aputure units and use them both simultaneously on shoots, especially when a second camera to one side needs a similar background to match the main camera's backdrop. The Aputure comes with several patterns. We usually use the one that looks like dappled foliage. Only rarely on fashion shoots have we used more geometric patterns in crisp focus. As mentioned, we brought the Nanlite projection lens first; If we had bought the Aputure first, I probably would have bought a second Aputure, because it does pretty much the same thing for less money.
