Failure (Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art)

I continue to be enamored at the concepts of Whitechapel Press's Documents of Contemporary Art series. And each time I purchase (yes purchase - you would think I learned the lesson by now) one of these books, I am extremely disappointed. Often excerpts, often too much Deleuze.For a contrast, see the MASS MoCA publication: Badlands: New Horizons in Landscape. A critical resource that is coherent, inclusive and critical, with a coherent thread throughout.

This series of books from whitechapel/ MIT press are really fantastic for artists.I revisit certain books from this series depending upon what I'm thinking about in my work at the moment.

It's dense, but if you're patient you'll get a lot out of it. I recommend not committing yourself to reading front to back; instead hop around from relevant chapter to relevant chapter.

A fine anthology and survey of contemporary issues by writers who bring to the forefront a number of interesting questions.

Every edition of this Whitechapel Documents of Contemporary Art is a guarantee, the texts included are alwaysa good point of departure or confrontation. The subjects of the books are important topics on Art now.

this book has a lot of failure in it. it's cool, if you like that sort of thing, but i don't.

Its an interesting read. Short articles that can be read on the bus home and then reread at a later date. Felt it lost some of its energy the further into the book I got. Having said that some good reference material here for essays.

I have bought three other books from the MIT/Whitechapel contemporary art series and they all have been incredible essay and interview based books. Spanning hundreds of years of source material on a topic that is almost never written about or featured is extremely inspiring and thought provoking. An extremely wide variety of artists, writers and thinkers are compiled into an order that seems possibly random at first but reveals a great evolution on need to fail in order to have success at some point.
