Very light but not strong

I heard alot of good reviews before making my purchasing decision on the Shark 3. Unfortunately upon receiving the item, the package and reel itself seems to be somewhat secondhand or an RA item. Not surprisingly when I started using the reel for the first time, it make a clicking sound when you wind the reel. Not very happy with the quality. I was going to recommend my friend to purchase it, but after this experience i think the reviews weren't genuine.

Pros: -High quality for the price. -The smoothest Kastking spinning reel I've ever purchased. No oil necessary. -Sharp looking reel. -Very strong drag with a wide range. -Perfect match for an Ugly Stik Carbon spinning rod. -Gave me a chance to use a half spool of Power Pro 20 lb. braid I've had for years. Cons: -Just one. This reel is very small for a 5000 size. I bought it for king salmon fishing, unaware of the sizing as compared to other 5000 reels. This one is closer to 3000 size. But the quality and smoothness of this reel prevented me from returning it. I can always use this little gem for coho salmon. But because the spool is small and narrow, enter the nearly 10-year old partial spool of Power Pro. I usually use 30 lb. braid on my coho salmon rigs, but the diminutive size of this reel screamed a lighter line. Just know that these reels run very small.....or at least the 5000-series does.

One of the very best reels for the money. Light weight, yet strong, with amazing line capacity. Can't believe you can get this so cheap! For those of you getting the 5000 size, this reel deserve the Gomexus Power Handle upgrade. It would cost almost as much as the reel, but trust me, it's worth it! So I read probably thirty 3 star and 4 star reviews of this reel before buying. They all said same thing, “very small for their listed size”. Well that’s 100% correct. That’s why I bought it. This reel is a 5000 and it’s the same size and weight as my old Plueger President 35(3500). It lists 190yds of 14lb mono so I know I can put close to that of 17lb Berkley Trilene XL smooth casting since it’s thinner than standard mono. I’m just using it for chatterbaits and deep diver cranks. Reel is buttery smooth as well. Hopefully it works as well as it appears it will.

For $60 the Sharky III 5000 at 10.5oz and an obscene amount of drag seemed way to good to be passed up. Plus it is advertised as being sealed! When I received the reel, the packaging was so nice that I thought I hit the jackpot... that’s where the love-affair ended. Immediately I was taken aback by the “cheapness” of the reel as it felt in hand. No matter I thought, if it fishes well, the “feel” matters less. I spooled 25# braid on it first and was disappointed with the line lay. It does not come with spool tuning washers, which was another disappointment. Took it fishing once and hated how tiny the knob felt in my hand and that I had several wind knots. Back to the drawing board, I found a knob from Penn along with their bearings that fit perfectly, so I added that and stripped the old line off, this time putting 10# braid on, hoping the line lay would improve... big nope there, the line lay was terrible again. Took it fishing in the new configuration and found that about every 5-10 casts I’d either have to fix a wind knot or I’d snap a lure off on cast. At this point I thought it was the 10# braid, so I switched to 12# braid from a different manufacturer and for once had a good line lay on the spool. So I decided to tough my way through the previous problems and paired it with a different rod for casting lighter lures. I caught a slot red drum and the reel worked well, so my confidence was building. Then about 100 or so casts later and several fish later the wind knots and sloppy line lay issues returned. Fed up with a reel that didn’t seem to be able to handle braid, I spooled some 14# mono and crossed my fingers. Next trip was almost the same, except instead of windknots the reel could not keep up with the mono and had a bird nest at the base of the spool. The reel just does not work well when you’re casting lures hundreds of times on a trip. It now lives on my bait catching rod and there it will stay. I thought that the weight combined with the advertised drag would make this an awesome reel for throwing lures over and over again, but was sorely disappointed. For those keeping track, I spooled 4 different sizes of line from 3 different manufacturers, swapped the knob out, and tried it on different rods... all in the hopes I would like this reel. 2 stars from me because I wanted to use this for more than just letting bait sit and reel in fish. Pictures are of the upgraded knob and the impact damage of one drop in a parking lot from about 3ft. If you’re in the market for a solid reel to throw lures all day with, pass on this one and spend $25 more on a Penn Battle II 4000.
