The Quest : personal notes on large canine pee management
This is really long because I've included all the things I've learned, and wish I had been able to read all in one place when my female dog first became ill. I've read dozens of descriptions, and bought at least 4 different brands - tho none of the $35 ones. Every single one promises to be leak-free, but it actually depends on the size of the dog, what is leaking, and the fit.I am managing sleep incontinence for Gracie - a weaker, but still active and happy 13 year-old Standard Poodle with Degenerative Myelopathy. DM doesn't include incontinence til the late stages. Grace, who now drinks truly vast amounts of water daily, has full control when awake, but pees during long naps and overnight. From the beginning I've used washable "chucks" - soft absorbent beds with waterproof backing. [There's a variety/learning curve there, too, and I recommend NorthShore Champion Washable Underpad Large] She moves around settling in, so I put them overlapped on her designated club chair indoors, and use strong clips to secure one to the four corners of her bed. There have been days when I've gone through 4 pads before bedtime, and in the morning she would wake up with some part of her hips, bum and back legs soaked and smelly. I started shopping for diapers last summer when she was still sleeping outside [her choice, always, every year for the last 5]. Once she decided to move back in for the winter, hosing her down just wasn't gonna be an option ;-)In the world of canine diapers, fit is important, of course. Many positive reviews - and pictures - are about small dogs. I'm happy for them, but/and when it comes to the amount of pee in a larger dog, fit is Everything - and not just to keep your furniture dry.A diaper needs to be comfortable enough for the dog to move comfortably and snug enough to hold an absorbent pad close to the her body, with elastic taught enough to contract along the sides of the pad as well as letting you tuck that area up close to your dog's body after the diaper is on. (The leak to be most concerned about is one that leaves your dog sleeping with urine on her skin.)So - two things about fit that sellers could easily help with but don't.Your assignment is to determine what size to get based on the manufacturer's "guidelines", with both sizes and guidelines varying from maker to maker, seller to seller. The worst give only ranges of weight & name a few breeds for each size, to educate your guess. The more helpful ones include *waist sizes* and have YOU MEASURE your DOG...and then guess. It was weeks before it hit me that we have to weigh/measure our dogs and then GUESS, but makers Never simply give the measurements -"specs" - of their product, nor do sellers open a sample of each & provide them. The other thing is the Other Number - the one that the guidelines *should* have us measure and include in the sizing chart, but don't: the distance- along her spine - between the base of our dog's tail and her waist - in front of the hip bone. The length of the fabric on top of the dog - from the tail hole to the edge of the diaper where it cinches around the waist - is not elasticized, it has no give - and it's frequently why so many people have to order twice from the same manufacturer.Standard Poodles are fairly tall, with a high narrow waist. Gracie is down from 50 to less that 44# but her waist hasn't changed- and at 19" frequently falls right in between one outfit's Small & Med, or another's Med & Lrge. I bought a couple different Smalls from other makers, but the panel on her back was so short that the diaper cinched *behind* her hip bones - closer to her tail, not around her true waist. So it pulled hard on the elastic in the pad area and it was so tight that one velcro tab always popped off when she lay down. The reviews for SS were very good, so i ordered a large. This brand is better made and/or better designed than any others I have. Like a less expensive Large i had ordered elsewhere and use during the day, it cinches above her hip bones and accommodates the most absorbent Always Discreet disposable incontinence pad, but is made of a soft, napped fabric instead of shiny polyester. Best of all, it has better elastic perfectly placed for a better tuck around the pad and up between the legs. The length between front edge and tail hole was actually a bit too long this time, so there was some gaping along the un-elasticized sides, and a little leakage next morning, but if you have any idea how much one of those disposable pads holds, you'd have been as thrilled as I was. I decided to see if a Medium would be perfect, and it was. As promised, they wash up really well.Neither Large nor Medium are long enough for an entire "long" Always Discreet Ultimate disposables, and cutting pads defeats the purpose, so i mail ordered "regular" and now we are set. I'm also making Grace go out midday (she used to be home alone for 10-12 hours), and cutting off her water in the evening. Lot more time between pad laundry loads, and a lot less dog-washing. yay.No matter how good the diapers are, tho, you should have pads for any place your dog likes to sleep. They're very easy to use and clean, and even with a soaked one, folding the the wet in - 3rds and 3rds - before you pick it up completely contains the smell until you do laundry. For the record - all washable bed pads come with instructions not to use fabric softener because it interferes with absorbency, so i do the same with these diapers)I know this is rambly and personal, but every relationship with a dog is unique - and pee is pretty damn personal ;-> Hope you find what suits you and yours.

I LOVE these Diapers by Bramton
I LOVE these Diapers by Bramton, but they do not have enough Velcro on the tabs. They fit MUCH BETTER when you sew or iron on more Velcro yourself. I just recently sent pics to the company asking them to use more Velcro. Here are three photos. The first one is my dog's OLD Bramton diaper, which I have sewed more Velcro to the tabs. The second photo shows her NEW diaper to which I have NOT sewed the extra Velcro to yet.The third photo shows the tabs of both diapers. The old pair has been washed many times & it has fuzz stuck in it from the washer, but you can see where I put the extra Velcro, and how much better they fit WITH it. They sometimes come OFF during play or the night because they need more Velcro. Also, I asked the company to make them in the pretty PINK & PURPLE colors they used to for the unlined version. I love the Teal, but it would be nice to have different colors to go with my dog's different dresses, which I made myself, because no one makes dresses for anything bigger than a Chihuahua it seems. The Teal diaper ALMOST matches her turquoise dress. But it would be SO NICE to have Pink, Purple, and maybe a GREEN one too! She has an ADORABLE green velvet winter dress! :D(Are you listening, Bramton??)

holds things in
I gave 3 stars for absorbency not because it does not absorb, but because it is more of a "pad holder" than a "protect the carpet" diaper. I put ladies' incontinence pads (cut in half) in as a liner to absorb moisture, as without it, the whole diaper becomes soaked. I use it for my 13 year old, incontinent pup. She sometimes loses control of her bowels as well, and it usually will hold the little tootsie roll in. ;) The diaper washes well and dries fairly quickly (line drying recommended by manufacturer). They stay on quite well, unless I put it on her a little crooked, then sometimes it slips off...possibly because she has hip problems & has to twist & turn a good bit to get up sometimes.I would recommend these diapers with the caveat that if using for urine capture, an additional pad is needed.

A real lifesaver!
Not sure why anyone would give this less than 5 stars as this product really saved us! We have a one year old Chocolate Lab who just got her first period. We were shocked at first because we hadn't really thought ahead enough to realize she would be getting her period one day. And when it came, it came big! Lol... A VERY heavy flow. I ordered these on Amazon on a Saturday, chose one day shipping for an extra $4 or $5 and received the product Sunday morning. What a lifesaver!! We had been keeping her in her crate other than to use the bathroom but once we received this diaper she was free to roam around the house once again...she was back to her happy self! We lined the diaper with a regular woman's maxi pad and it worked great. The velcro straps held up the diaper and even though it kind of bothered our dog a little at first, with a few corrections from us (telling her no when she would try to bite at it), she was soon acting as if it wasn't even there. I highly recommend this product!
