Do these have any kind of expiration date?

Good question: I also wondered about this.There are no real biological products in the contents, and there is no expiration period listed on either the box or the individual packets.I use this same brand product from the larger tubes as well, and the only thing you need to deal with is if the product is exposed for a day or so. In this case it will dry out.So the real answer is that there is no practical expiration, unless you open a packet; in which case it starts to dry out after a day or so. It will then harden a bit like (Elmer's) glue, but not as hard.

Has anyone tried this for shoes that rub or breaking in new shoes?

Absolutely. I carried one of these small packets inside a ziplock bag (there's multiple days worth of cream in each packet) with me during a week at Disneyland/Universal recently and used it mid-day to touch up on the top of my foot while wearing Croc Literide's without socks. I'm not used to not wearing socks so I anticipated the rubbing on the top of my foot would be uncomfortable - with the Butt'r cream it was nothing but smooth sailing. I've used "Glide for Her" in bar form for the same use and it was incredibly unhelpful. But i'd absolutely recommend Chamois Butt'r for this use though!

Good consistency and lasts for ages

I use this anytime I head out for a ride, short or long. Just a little bit of it works well. It also lasts for quite a while. I ride three times a week, and I expect this jar will still have a fair amount left in well over a year.
