The 1980s retro horror classic! Young and easily frightened 16-year old Heather is called to stay with her grandmother in the hopes of helping her turn an old funeral home into a bed-and-breakfast. But strange happenings and unexplained murders around the home quickly make this vacation spot a ""dead-and-breakfast"" - with no answers as to who or what is causing all the death. Well-executed gloomy thriller in the Hitchcock vein.

Good old-fashioned ghost story
This is a great old-fashioned ghost story with lots of suspense. Not gory or over the top cheese. 4 stars for keeping me entertained and questioning till the bitter end.

Hitchcock style
Very ‘Hitchcockin’ from the screenplay to the way it’s shot and acted. I forwarded through many parts as movies back then inserted a lot of B roll shots of things that aren’t necessarily contributing to the storyline itself. I liked it though. I will say as another reviewer mentioned the genre is categorized incorrectly! This is more of a PSYCHO-THRILLER-CRIME-MYSTERY no real super natural stuff, it might have been mistakenly categorized as such because the main location is a “funeral home” and people associate the supernatural with it. OR because of “nightmares” however if that was an attempt to drive “supernatural“ it was a poor in delivery! I liked this movie. Glad it wasn’t supernatural as that isn’t really my thing!

For real
I don't understand some of the ratings saying the picture is bad. Maybe they have remastered the picture because the copy I got had a very good picture and the sound was fine. As for the movie it is very good. When you start watching it your not going anywhere untill the very end and what an ending. This is as good as the old B/W movies of yesterday that could frighten the day lights out of you. A real horror movie in color with out gore and all the junk you get with todays horror movies. The plot is great and even the acting is good. This movie is better than average and by far better done than most pictures of its time.

Pretty Poor
Saw this flim as part of an "X" rated (for the time) drive in movie triple feature in 1983..."The Hearse", "Funeral Home", and the sole reason they could call it "X"..."The Gates of Hell" (aka: "City of the Living Dead" by Lucio Fulci). It was long before the current (and pretty much useless) rating of NC17. This was back in the day when "X" could be for violence. I have fond recollections of that evening but I recalled "Funeral Home" wasn't very good. 24 years later it's finally on DVD & it still isn't very good. William Fruet directs this leaden picture with almost zero thrills. The few genuine horror aspects of the film are totally run of the mill & tame. Most of the movie's running time is spent with a boring storyline, boring dialog & boring characters. There are a few atmospheric shots but that's about all it has going for it. This film reminds me of the stale popcorn I ate at the drive in that night. The acting is fine. The grandma (while not appealing or very interesting) is okay but mostly her character comes off as just annoying. The lead actress Lesleh Donaldson is a decent enough & shows off some acting chops but somehow doesn't convey "lead" to me in this particular film. Barry Morse does a fine job as Mr. Davis. Harvey Atkin of "Meatballs" & "Cagney & Lacey" fame rips out one of his patented "jovial goofball" roles. He's always reliable. Finally Peggy Mahon does a pretty good job of pulling off the "cheap floozie" role she's given. She's actually very funny while tormenting the village idiot with her wicked "come hither" banter. But the film is just outright boring. You think from the ominous title it will be a horrific thrill ride like maybe a poor man's "Phantasm". It's nothing like that. Just a slow moving "who done it?" type of thing.Legacy Entertainment has dropped the ball as well in this release. One big mistake was the boxcover. Pretty "blah". Okay well the spooky funeral home looks fairly creepy. But what sucked me in as a kid was the original one-sheet theatrical poster (check it out at imdb.com). Very cool...a hand coming out of the ground onto a gravestone, the backlit funeral home off in the distance, and what appears to be zombies surrounding the walkway. Why Legacy didn't use that is beyond me. I'm sure it would suck in a few buyers just with that creepy picture (however misleading those images are). Lastly the picture quality. Really bad. Full screen, grainy, looks like a transfer from VHS. Worst of all are the hum bars that roll through the movie the ENTIRE running time! Totally unacceptable & very annoying. The tagline for this flick was "Some things never rest in peace". It's too bad somebody unearthed this flick 24 years after it stank the first time.

Totally fun movie.
This movie has the typial aura of the "Golden Age of Horror" movies.Bad acting, no-name actors, grainy film quality, seriously if you are a b-horror fan then don't pass this one up.The grandmother is totally creepy, making for a nice eerie plot. And of course, any movie involving a funeral home is just a must for any cult horror fans.I mean, c'mon, its a funeral home turned into bed & breakfast where the guests go missing, its an irresistable plot.I was caught off guard by the twist ending, I thought it was really freaky. This is just a great movie, you need to see this if you a fan of b-horror.Brent.

Leave it to Canada
Canadian actors are really some of the best in the world... like Jim Cary,John Vernon and Barry Morse. First of all the setting was perfect and the story fit the area.. What bother's me was ...how did a young girl want to convince her granny that a family funeral home. Would make a perfect B & B anyway.. ? The basement had all that junk in it and what was remaining of the funeral parlor downstairs ..was still there as well..? To be honest I thought it was the care taker ...don't let me spoil it for you.. It was a decent movie ... Actor Barry Morse I knew his work from the "Fugitive" with the late David Janssen ...

Underrated Spooky Story with no gore/nudity
I give this 3 1/2 stars. Not many people have heard of this film. It was a little known release. I saw it as a kid and never forgot it. I traced it down recently and bought the DVD. The DVD itself is a bad transfer. There are lines going through it at the first part of the film. It isn't too distracting and make it seem more nostalgic and drive-in like. What I like about the movie is that it manages to be creepy and intriguing without gore and nudity. There is also a line in the film that is so true, "funeral home workers face being mocked and are misunderstood".Anyways, you may have heard it ends like "Psycho". And I totally agree it does!If you like this film, let me recommend these creepy films as well:Watcher In The WoodsThe House By The CemeteryThe Legend Of Boggy Creek

it was really good. Moves along at a good pace
For an old made for tv type movie, it was really good. Moves along at a good pace. Good acting, even if the plot is predictable. Enjoyable!

SOME THINGS SHOULD REMAIN BURIED!
I've always regarded "Funeral Home" as an underrated creepy Canadian classic from the 1980's and I was super excited when my copy finally arrived. When I looked on Amazon, it said the title was on back order on the day of release; I thought this was a good thing. Sadly my excitement quickly went away the second I put the DVD into my player. It's evident once the film starts, that no amount of restoration or effort was put into this DVD release from CFS; the company responsible for the bootleg video/audio quality. I'll admit that I own some poor quality budget DVD's, but this has to be one of the worst I've ever seen. The source material for this release must have come from a worn out bootleg VHS.The video image is plagued with speckling, debris and annoying lines that fill the TV screen throughout the film, way to much for any fan of this movie to tolerate. The colors are pretty much washed out and the print is way too dark. The movie is barely viewable in my opinion and this review should serve as a warning to any fan of this movie. Buyer Beware! My copy is already on its way back to Amazon.

great Canadian low budget horror film
another great low budget horror flick. I did some research on the film and found out it was made right here in Canada, specifically, the nice small village of Elora.
