Kwikset 99170-004 SmartCode 917 Keypad Keyless Entry Contemporary Residential Electronic Lever Lock Deadbolt Alternative with Halifax Door Handle and SmartKey Security, Matte Black

For over 25 years our side garage door has been different than the rest of the house (only Schlage among Kwikset locks). I've been looking at several "smart" door locks and decided that I didn't need anything that used WiFi or an app. Just a simple door lock that could be opened with a regular key or a typed in code, in case we go into the backyard and lock ourselves out. This Kwikset 917 seemed to be the answer. It has a keypad and key lock, one that can be re-keyed with their SmartKey system. It can be setup to automatically lock each time the door is opened from the outside or inside, or set to be unlocked all the time (much like a regular door lock). Exiting from inside the garage does not require the lock to be first "unlocked", unlike some regular entry door locks. While the description does not explicitly say that it is weatherproof enough to be used as an exterior lock, our side door is slightly protected by the roof overhang so I'm hopeful it survives our mild California weather. Got the wife's approval to switch locks and then waited until it went on sale ($69). Installation was a snap, given I've switched out my fair share of door locks over the years. The door had a standard backset so nothing was needed to change in the latch. It might be useful to have some help when assembling the exterior (keypad) side with the interior side but a large hand can hold both while screwing them together. The interior door handle went on without any problems. The only real moment of panic occurred when attaching the exterior door handle. I had thought there was a missing set screw for the handle, like what the interior one used, but re-reading the instructions (a couple of times), I found that there's a set screw *inside* the latching mechanism and not on the handle itself. Programming the unlock codes were easy given the instructions. Re-keying the lock was a bit confusing as when you are supposed to turn the new key (the one you are changing the lock to use) counterclockwise 180 degrees, it only went 90. With this door lock, there's no need or capability to "lock" the door using the key so there's no provision for turning the lock counterclockwise from the "normal" position. The lock has been installed for an hour but I hope not to have to come back to this review in the future....

Definitely a high quality item as it withstands all weather, hot, cold, and rainy. I was even able to use it with ice on the buttons. I’ve had it for a year and it seems like it will last for years to come.
