Everyone who grows food should read this book!
Altho' this book is aimed more towards the larger scale farmer - [because they are the ones that are relying too heavily on chemical herbicides, pesticides etc]it is also of value to the smaller grower because Charles Walters take the approach of understanding how nature works. It is very similar to the Vitalist vs. Atomist approach to Healing. The vitalist works with nature to promote healing where is the atomist works by "acting upon" a natural process and changing it thru' surgery, chemicals etc.Walters says that by paying closer attention to your weeds, they will tell you a LOT about the condition of your soil. If you give your body the nutrition it needs, it has the ability to heal itself. Similarly with soil. Too much crabgrass can indicate there is not enough calcium in the soil. Correct the nutritional imbalance and your garden soil will no longer be hospitable to crabgrass. There is a lot of good information in this book aimed towards helping you control weeds without poisons. the wide scale poisoning of our planet thru' chemical pesticides and herbicides is creating wide spread health problems and killing the very planet we need to live on. We have no other place to go but extinct unless we start addressing this problem. People have been brainwashed by chemical companies to think large scale farming is impossible to do organically but still it is being done & has been proven it can be done. I would go even farther to state "it Must be done" For the health of our planet and future generations.I read a book on lymphoma a few years ago and saw that farmers lead the list in that form of cancer - why? Because they are using toxic chemicals in their farming practices. Walters shows that continued use of these chemicals is actually ruining our farmland and creating more problems than they promise to solve. By understanding the laws of nature and working within those laws, we not only achieve better outcomes but create a brighter future. Every Farmer /Gardener should read this book.

Okay.
This book is very informative but is not an easy read. It takes a bit of work to read it because it is quite technical. I guess you could say that it is informative but not very interesting!
