Inspiring, Realistic, Enriching, and Just An Awesome Toy!
This is a really neat and worthwhile toy that *I* could fall in love with! My 2 year old son is very interested in the stars, moon and planets at the moment and is always pointing them out in the sky or asking where they are if there are clouds. The moon is a great addition to his room to continue the curiosity when it's too rainy, cold or cloudy outside. It also works great as a nightlight and will automatically turn off after 30 minutes of use. USE The moon's surface is textured to reflect the appearance of the actual moon, giving it more realism. When it's at work as more than a room decoration during the day, it brightens up the room at night as it waxes and wanes through 12 lunar phases. A neat feature that's not mentioned in the product description is that on the back of the moon are 3 hanging holes, so it can be hung at an approximate 30 degree angle to the right or left as well as being able to be hung vertically. REMOTE It uses a remote to scroll through the 12 phases either in automatic (5 second per phase) mode or manual mode. The remote is fairly easy to use as long as my 2 year old remembers to point the correct end at the moon otherwise it won't do anything. I'm having him put the remote in one spot when it's not in use so we don't lose it, because if we do we'd only be able to manually turn it on in the back, and wouldn't be able to use the phases... that's a remote only feature. BATTERIES Amazon's description of the product lists it as only using 2-AAA batteries, but come to find out that's just for the remote. The moon uses 4-AA batteries as well. Several reviewers have made mention of the short battery life. If it runs for 30 minutes a night, every night, for 3 months as some have claimed it does, that's 45 continuous hours of life. We found Sanyo NEW 1500 eneloop 8 Pack AA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries a little while back and use them for everything battery operated. They will last longer than standard batteries and even rival other rechargeables, so we're using them in this product in hopes that it will help with the battery issue. OVERALL This is a realistic and fascinating toy for any child (or adult) to enjoy. Highly recommended!

perfect for moon lover
My toddler is obsessed with the moon right now. This is so cute on her wall and actually puts off a good amount of light. It goes off automatically after about 30 minutes which is usually plenty of time for her to fall asleep. I've had it for about 3 months now and haven't had to change the batteries in it yet. I did however lose the little remote that comes with it almost immediately but it has a switch on the side that you can use to turn it on and off. If you use the switch it just automatically puts it in the full moon setting. I have been having one minor problem with it which is when I go to turn it on with the switch on the side I always have to do it several times before it actually works. Overall I love it and I actually want one for my bedroom now.

I'd give it ten stars, if I could...
Like any toddler, our 18 month old daughter has developed some fascinations. She loves to see lights being turned on and off. She loves to use remote controls to control the TV/TiVo ('control' may be too strong a word - 'mess with' is probably more appropriate), and to turn lights and fans on and off, herself. And she loves to go outside and look at the moon, and loves any pictures or representations of the Moon. So, imagine our surprise and delight to find a toy that combines three of her primary fascinations - a representation of the moon, lights that can be turned on and off, and a remote to control it all. It's like the Uncle Milton toy designers had bugged our house, and developed the perfect toy for her. Without her seeing it beforehand we hung it up on the wall, turned off the room lights, brought her in, and handed her the remote. She knows what remotes do, so immediately started pushing buttons and looking around to see what effect she was having. When the Uncle Milton Moon in My Room started lighting up, she excitedly started pointing and shouting, "Moon! Moon! Moon!" while continuing to push the buttons and change the lighting patterns. In short, it was a big, BIG hit. The product was simple to set up, you need two AAA batteries for the remote, and four AA batteries for the Moon. The Moon is about the size of a dinner plate, and is concave, so that it curves out from the wall, and in the middle the exterior surface is probably 2.5" to 3" away from the wall. It hangs from a nail, and has three hanging angles to choose from. It lights from the interior, and the outside shell is semi-translucent, and the features of the Moon are also dimensional, meaning that it's not just painted or a decal, the surface of the unit rises and falls to provide the visual of the features you see in the pictures. The lights work in a couple of ways. First, you can just turn them on, and the whole Moon is lit. You can also manually run through the phases of the moon, there are six sections/slices of the Moon, and each lights up in sequence, on from right to left, then off from right to left, in an approximation of the progression of the Moon phases. So, when you manually control it, there are twelve steps to move through the complete set of phases. Lastly, you can set it in automatic mode, where it runs through all the phases continuously, each phase coming about 5 seconds after the last one. This works great as a calming, bed-time diversion, too. In any mode, the unit will turn itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity. Given that it is battery powered, it's a good thing that it can't simply be turned on and left on. Given how popular this toy is so far, I expect to replace the batteries pretty frequently, but it's a small price to pay. We liked it so much, we got two of them. Also note that the Uncle Milton web site sells replacement remotes, and I've already got one ordered, as the unit doesn't do anything without the remote. Our toddler likes to 'hide' things and/or drop them in liquid, so I'm assuming we're going to need to replace a lost/broken/drowned/flushed remote at some point.

"Moon moon moon, my night light..."
I'm not sure why there are so many reviews complaining about how frequently people have to change the batteries. My son uses his every night and the batteries lasted from X-mas when we gave it to him until the end of April when the light got dimmer and the batteries needed to be changed for the first time. It you set it to the timed setting it will cut off after about an hour or so and the batteries last quite a long time. My son puts it on when he goes to sleep and occasionally in the middle of the night if he wakes up to see it’s no longer on. He likes to set it to one of the two "half moon" settings and leave it there as opposed to the automatic setting where it goes thru all the phases. My son really loves this as his night light. It looks great (especially high on the wall away from where the child can touch it), offers a good amount of light, is educational, easily mounted on a wall with either Velcro or a simple drywall screw and anchor (not included) and isn't the potential hazard that a traditional plug in style night light could be. A word to the wise, put some Velcro (hook & loop) on the remote and hang it on the back of the bedroom door or someplace to avoid losing it when not in use because without the remote you cannot operate the moon. I bought this item at Khol's for $8 more + sales tax then saw it on Amazon cheaper. Since I have Amazon Prime I got free 2 day shipping so it was a no brainer to return the one I got at Kohl's and order a new one from Amazon. The Kohl's version was made by National Geographic not Uncle Milton but they are 100 % identical. One other note, the moon itself is textured and there is a lot of detail on the surface adding to the real look of the moon. This is a great addition to a child's room and I highly recommend it for any child that either wants a nice nightlight that isn't so "run of the mill" or any child who is a solar system, space or science enthusiast.

Up, up in the sky!
Update; My daughter is now 10 and still loves to occasionally turn on her moon. We never did experience the battery issues others spoke of in their reviews. (Replaced three times since original purchase in 2010.) The moon is really fun for "ghost" nights and sleepovers. All the kids seem to find it a calming ambiance. The timed setting is perfect for setting a "lights out" time. This is probably one of the better kiddo items she's received. I'd buy it again. *** I purchased this for my 7 yr old daughter who loves sitting on the back porch gazing at the night sky. Between these: MILKY WAY GLOW STICKERS [Toy ] and these: Glow-in-the-Dark Colorful Twinkle Stars , her room is fantastic. (In case you are wondering if your child might like Uncle Milton's Moon, my daughter enjoys dirt and dresses, cowboy boots and pretend make-up, craft projects and reading, etc.) We hung the Moon on the wall about 10' from her bed, and have the Twinkle stars radiating out along the wall and up toward her ceiling. From there, we placed the Milky Way stickers (each about 5-10" apart) on a semi-path towards her bed and above it. Every night before bedtime, she turns on her room light, brushes her teeth and jammies up (about 5-7 mins), then jumps into bed ready to be awed. I press the small remote button (30 min timer) and turn off her room light. We then snuggle staring up at the amazing "sky" in her room. The moon turns on each 1/4 phase, one added to the next, and then turns them off similarly. When fully lit, it is fairly bright; excellent at chasing away any darkness fears. (We do not use it as an all-night night-light as we have a small hall light for that purpose.) My daughter LOVES her moon, as does her 19 yr old big sister, Dad, and sleep-over friends. (Note: We are on the same set of batteries placed in the unit early October, and used nearly every night.)

Remote wasn't in box, mostly useless now
UPDATED Let me first review what I did receive in the box. The moon looks great. It's got a nice texture and it's pretty detailed. You can see the lines where it would change phases as very small shadows but only up close. It mounts nicely on the wall. That being said, I bought this as a gift for my nephew. After he opened it we discovered that there was no remote in the box. Without the remote, the moon and only be turned on and off with a small switch behind it, which is very inconvenient when it's mounted to the wall. Further, all it can do is be all on, or all off. I bought this product because it changes phases but without the remote that's not possible. I emailed the company (Uncle Milton) about this and never got a response. My nephew tore the box to pieces so I couldn't return it to Amazon. So overall this product (and my gift) was a bust. I DO NOT recommend this product, but if you do buy it, check to make sure the remote is there the moment you get it from Amazon. If you just assume it is (why wouldn't it be) like I did, you'll end up screwed. UPDATE: We were finally able to contact the manufacturer and received a replacement remote so now it works fine. Still keeping 3 stars for the initial lack of support and basic unsuitably of this without the remote.

Very cool
This item is way too cool. My son absolutely LOVES is. My only complaint is that its battery operated and shuts off after 30 min. I would have preferred it electric and staying on.
