"Hamelot" for hammies!
This is an amazing hamster habitat! We researched many different types of habitats and read dozens and dozens of reviews, good and bad, on this product. In the end, we settled on the COMPLETE Habitrail Ovo system, starting with the Studio and the Loft, and then added 3 Towers, the Adventure Pack, the Trainer and multiple extra components, including curves, tubes, elbows, cubes, tees and dens. Why so much? Hamsters live in underground burrows (not open, empty spaces like glass tanks and wire cages) with lots of little tunnels leading to small dens and storage rooms. At night, they come out and run up to 8 miles in search of seeds, nuts and goodies they can stuff in their cheeks and run home to hoard. This habitat allows you to recreate their natural habitat in your home. Some reviews indicated the following problems: leaky water bottles, connectors that don't lock, tubes that fall apart. In response: 1) The water bottle is brilliant! If filled to the top, flipped over into the holder and tapped lightly a couple of times(at which point a few drops fall out), a vacuum forms and the gravity-fed design works great. By mounting the water bottles at dead-end points on the outside of the design, you can easily wipe away the drips from setting it and not have any more problems. 2) The connectors can be a little tricky to master, but work very simply. We sat down at the table with some pieces and connectors and gently figured out the trick in about 5 minutes. Once you've got it down, they work remarkably well. And they make it super easy to clean the cage. If your hammy is typical, he'll pick one place to relieve himself; just loosen the connectors, remove the soiled area, cap the open ends temporarily, wash the section, dry, reassemble and pop back in. Takes about 5 minutes a day. You can wash sections as needed. 3) The tubes fit nicely - if you take your time and make sure the small plastic edges are lined up properly. Most of the shaped pieces fit smoothly, but it's a little bit trickier on the u-turns. If you balance your design, it also fits together better. Too much weight on one side can pull the tubes and loosen the connectors. Overall, you just have to take your time and learn how the pieces fit together. Be prepared to spend an afternoon setting up and designing your habitat, preferably before you pick up your pet at the store. We spent about 3 hours building the whole thing; we connected all the pieces together on 3-shelf unit and wound the tubes around the legs. We went to the pet store with the Transport Unit, filled with bedding and treats. He was quite happy for the ride home, then spent the entire evening exploring his new burrow. He's created a nest of bedding inside one of the dens, and a food hoard in another nearby. He runs up and down the tubes and runs miles in his Trainer every night. He loves it and we love watching him through the clear tubes! The ONLY drawback to this habitat is the cost. If you want to see your hammy display natural behaviors and have an enriching environment, it takes more than just one piece like the Studio OR the Loft. An investment into several expansion pieces is necessary for the best habitat. Well worth the money, though, for the best interactive experience. And you can redesign periodically to stimulate your hammy. We love it and wouldn't choose anything else.

Better than CritterTrail for larger hamsters
I've had a few hamsters now, and have tried a few different cages and tubing systems. I've tried CritterTrail tubes and Super Pet Puzzle Playgrounds. The CritterTrail tubes are a bit tight for large hamsters like Syrian hamsters. The Puzzle Playground have big elbows however the snap together frames are fiddley and come apart after a few reconfigurations. Once my Syrian chewed his way thru a frame and the whole structure collapsed. These Habitrail Ovo pieces are very sturdy and yet are easy (for humans) to take apart. The locking ring does take a bit of getting used to however once you get the hang of it, it's a really nice system. My current hamster has "itchy teeth" and chews a lot, but so far the plastic has held up well. She is also an escape artist but again so far she has not escaped from this system. I agree with other reviewers that the water bottle from the Ovo system is a joke, I can't see how a hamster can use it unless they lie on their back. Overall I really like the Ovo system, it's easy to assemble, very secure and study, and easy for me to take apart and clean. I especially like the den unit, my hamster uses it for sleeping yet it's easy for me to watch her as she sleeps. Recommended! UPDATE May 22, 2012: Now that my hamster is bigger (full grown) she uses the transport unit as her bedroom and uses the den as her potty. I have added a second den unit and she uses that one for food storage. This is great because it makes cleanup easier (via the removeable tray in the potty den), and I can look in the 2nd den to see how much food she has stored before I give her more.

Excellent starter to hamster cage extensions
I bought this about a month ago and I highly recommend this package. This is great to start yourself and your Syrian hamster with tubes, pods and other extensions. Buying a whole set can be daunting with the prices and this was a great deal. My hamster, Pebbles, is in a bin cage and I simply have the tubes leading up and out into the carrier with the den connected at the end. Pebbles LOVES this!! She has made the green den her sleeping area which is awesome because that leaves more space in the bin cage for toys. It looks like she is in a little space ship in there. It is fun to watch her go up and down tubes especially when carrying her treats and toys. So cute! This makes me want to buy more pieces to add on. The pods are very easy to clean which is nice because my hamster does all her peeing in the blue carrier. That is another plus because the bedding in the bin cage doesn't get soiled as fast. YUSH! The only downside to this is understanding how the pieces go together. I couldn't believe that the package DID NOT come with instructions on how to assemble the parts. No booklet, nothing on the box. I was able to figure out the tubes and green den pretty quickly but not the blue carrier. Seriously, it took me nearly half an hour fiddling around with the parts! I couldn't understand which was front, back, top, or bottom with the blue lid. Then suddenly it popped in place somehow and I have no idea how it happened! Also the twisting connectors are a bit confusing. I don't understand really how they connect or seal the tubes and pods together. It is nice that I can twist the tubes around to different directions but sometimes that will release the connection and the tube pops off. Is there a way to lock it in so that way I can change the direction of the tubes without disconnecting them? After trying a couple times it connects back on so it's not a big deal. It all stays together very well and my hamster is able to venture out of her bin cage without running loose. I am looking forward to finding more parts and planning various extensions that I can make for Pebbles. Oh, the carrier and pod are awesome for transporting your hamster when traveling. I simply put the den and carrier together with the exit closed off. Pebbles went with me to the grocery store and she fell asleep. Such a sweetie :3

Best bargain for your buck.
My Robo hammies love this thing! When it's horizontal of course, When it's actually assembled the way it is in the picture they never wanted to climb that high and reach the loft, so I hat to turn the tubing horizontally and deal with it that way. Since then I've added onto it continuously and even purchased a large bin to add more space for them, considering that they need 450sq inches of flat space to run around in. This makes the perfect upper deck for my hammies and still lets me have fun with their enclosure while fully providing for their needs all at the same time! The plastic is sturdy and durable and the connections secure, no hammies escaping anytime soon! But I've noticed that they pee in the tunnels ALOT! So, I've found that the best method for cleaning the tubes is to take some toilet paper to wipe off the poo and then dunk the tubes and connections into a buck of soapy water, lightly scrub with a soft sponge and then rinse in clean water and dry with a rag. This goes by pretty quickly and cleans out all of the pee an poo in one go! And as a last note, the loft area is pretty hard for Robos to go into, so give it time and hide some treats up there along with bedding to encourage your hammies to explore. My Robos still don't like it but will sleep in the curved tube under it just fine, only going up if the loft has treats. Overall this is a great add on enclosure for dwarf hammies BUT it isn't large enough to accommodate the 450sq in minimum that they need to be happy and healthy, if your hammy is chewing on the inside tube grips like mine was, get a big clear bin and add the tubing into it to make it a double decker, trust me both you and your hammy will love it!

"Adventure Pack" - bought 1, then another, will buy s'more
Disclosure: bought for substantially less as an Amazon Warehouse item. I didn't want to pay full-price for this. When I saw one come up for less due to a damaged box item, I took the plunge. There are two "outhouse" globes - both larger than I thought. This also comes with a nifty 5-way cube connector, one T-joint, two elbows, and two larger straight T-joints. I've found it a challenge to find a use for the large T's, but the other ones get used sometimes. The mice seem to avoid the larger globe, but 3 of them sometimes crammed into the smaller one to sleep. Another cosmetically damaged one came up and I bought it - it was cracked at the joint, but once assembled, fully functional. What I found is that one of my pregnant Mom's preferred to turn this into her nest - and dragged bedding from all over to completely fill the globe. She birthed the babies in a "Habitrail OVO Maze". When she found this smaller globe, she moved bedding from all over the cage overnight and culled her litter down to 2 - and moved the 2 to the globe. I can see then kicking around while I took the pictures for this review. I tried 7 different outhouses for my mice. I am keeping all of them and leaving reviews for each one. Four are from Habitrail , 2 are from Crittertrail, and 1 is from Tiny Tales (The Tiny Tales one isn't on Amazon, but only at PetSmart - short story on that one is it's spacious, but has the opening at the bottom). The good thing about both globes that came with the Adventure pack is that the entrance is higher than the floor - rather than coming right through the bottom of the floor. The mother mouse probably realized her babies could easily fall down the hole in the Maze and moved them once she was aware of the globe. The other outhouse I have with a side entrance is the "Kaytee CritterTrail Fun-nel Small Animal Outhouse" and another mother chose that as her nest - although she birthed them in there and didn't cover the entire structure with bedding. Although the Habitrail globe has air holes, I see condensation on the inside. The Kaytee one has no air holes, but so far, I see no fogging up inside that one. Since the floor is below the horizontal entrance way - making the bedding inside naturally stay inside unless the critters purposefully try to dig it out Some of the other outhouses have the entrance from the bottom - which makes the others naturally have the bedding fall through the entrance. The other ones could also have babies wander and fall down the tube - probably why one mother chose to move hers after culling to this one and the other chose the Kaytee. The big globe seems to be too large for the mice's comfort. I have found that mice prefer cramped spaces when given the choice between a large spacious >1000 sq in cage, >500 sq in cage, or even the >150 sq in ones by Habitrail or Kaytee and the like. When they get into the big spaces, they get disoriented and uncomfortable and zip around from side to side and quickly exit. My mice have access to very large spaces in multiple cages, and prefer to spend most of their time - and birth in cramped spaces like the smaller globe. Some of them even prefer the 5 way connecting cube that came with this kit - sometimes I'll see two of them cramped in the cube and sleeping - there is one male mouse that prefers to spend most of his time awake in the 5 way cube - he will traverse long distances to the food accessible through the large open area cage - and bring back one or two pieces of food to the small cramped cube - then eat it - then repeat. The Habitrail connecting rings are very secure - but also very tricky to secure and use correctly. If the rings included are not secured or used correctly, the structure falls apart with the slightest lateral movement. I still haven't been able to master the use of the Habitrail connecting rings - some of them don't seem to engage at all - are they will grip one tube, but not the other. I prefer the Kaytee or Tiny Tales connecting rings - they are more difficult to affix and detach than the Habitrail, but they are also more secure and there is no question if it's connected correctly. If another one goes up on Amazon Warehouse, I'm getting it.

Cool Design, Crummy Quality, and Service
I bought this for my son so his Pudding Winter White hamster could now have a cool new cage, since Hamtaro's old cage had now been over used and was falling apart. He was so excited he could not wait for the product to arrive! On the day the Hagen Habitrail OVO Studio Limited Edition arrived he quickly got to assembling it thinking it would be an easy task, which it was not... This cage took 45 minutes to assemble and while finishing up assembly he noticed that the back opening door area was broken! the latch was molded wrong and in some odd position that when closed (with difficulty) it would simply snap open with a melancholy, "SNAP" (not to mention it was impossible to open when you needed it open ^-^)! This could be a huge issue because of the risk that his hamster could escape, so we used some handy dandy duct tape to fix the job... The Water bottle was a terrible idea that was not practical and most likely made for effect, because poor old Hamtaro could not drink from it with ought getting on his back twisting his head grabbing it with one hand while supporting his body with the other and getting drenched. With much hardship we managed to install a small regular metal ball type water bottle that worked fine. After 3 months of use the clear dome type roof cracked completely in half and thuse this cage became a complete useless piece of junk... Hamtaro got a new cage and this one was cleaned and packed away into the closet. I have made attempts contacting Hagen regarding the poor quality of their cage and still I am yet to get a Email or Call. Thanks Hagen for a waste of money. -.- PROS: ~looks snazzy ~You can customize with add-ins/add-ons ~Awesome compact food and nesting are idea CONS: ~Hamster will have some trouble climbing tubing ~Wheel is very loud ~water bottle leaks and is very flawed ~Hamster has trouble climbing stairs to get to food ~Hamster can escape ~poor quality material ~Poor company service Really disappointed if Hagen had even replied so we could exchange the cage for a not so damaged one...

Cute, quiet but high maintenance
This is an attractive hamster home with different cute compartments and attachments that you can configure in different ways. I bought this for a dwarf hamster. I liked how customers said it was not smelly, and rather hamster proof. I also liked that the studio was not a cage with wires for the hamster to chew on- nice, healthy, and quiet. The habitat protected the hamster from drafts, too. I liked that the hamster could explore the different tunnels. I read reviews thoroughly and took their advice: get a different water bottle, configure the tubes horizontally for a dwarf hamster (very true!) and do not use the wheel provided- use another one without openings in which the hamster could get their foot caught. I was willing to roll with all of that. But, what I didn't realize is how much time it takes to clean the thing. Since the tubes are horizontal for a dwarf hamster, the hamster spreads food, waste and bedding all over the place- no gravity here to make things fall down into central areas for cleaning. Even when the hamster uses one area for its "restroom" removing that compartment is necessary, and often more attachments need to be removed. I will spare you the graphics, but suffice it to say, that for me, just detaching the tubes and shaking them out is not sufficient. Perhaps the whole habitat does not need to be disassembled every night, but quite a bit of it does. Even though I have the hang of how to connect and reconnect the tubes, doing so, washing, drying and assembling all the time is tedious. I think it is also a little stressful on the hamster. Another thing I wasn't really considering is that if you open the main compartment to tame your hamster and have your hand present, the hamster can escape, because it is not a deep area. One thing that has worked for me is to bring the Studio into the bathtub. I make sure the stopper is in the tub, and line the bottom of the tub with an old yet clean towel. I open the compartments so the hamster can come out and explore while I clean everything up. (The ball works well for this too, but not for if you want the hamster to come over to you, or if you ever want to pet it.) Another advantage to this is that it helps to "air out" the Studio and keep that smell of hamster-ness under control. I should mention that the very first time my son and I assembled this, a part broke off- a little latch on the hood of the blue loft area. The orange cubby in the main compartment was already attached- was this a return that I received? Never mind. Still cute. We used a piece of masking tape to fix the problem, I just didn't want to hassle with a return. If you are planning to have a pet hamster for a child, keep in mind that this habitat might be a little overwhelming for them to do all the cleaning every day for many children- maybe even yours. Also, if you need to detach as many parts as I seem to, be diligent to make sure all of the attachments are completely connected and secure to avoid a hamster on the loose. Maybe other people have a simplified experience for their dwarf hamsters with this habitat, but that is what mine has been for the month we have had it so far. If you find this habitat too cute to pass up, just be sure to know what you are getting into.

Our hamster sabotaged herself with this layout
First I bought the Habitrail Loft. Unfortunately, our hamster, Noir, seemed spooked while living in it. She holed up in the Loft's little orange "cave" under the staircase (behind the exercise wheel). At night, when I brought food and cleaned her cage, she rarely ventured out. It was like owning an invisible hamster - all the work, and none of the fun. Once in a while she'd venture out to use the exercise wheel, but she became startled when anyone entered the room where we keep the Loft. Hoping to create a more interesting and natural environment for Noir (as the manufacturer and some reviewers suggested), I added the Adventure Pack and the Mini Maze, setting up a great extended environment with trails and cubbies. Then I blocked the entrance to the Loft's orange "cave" to encourage Noir to explore her new home. At first she was quite curious, and she immediately explored the tunnels. But after making a nest in one of the pods, she became even more spooked. The moment she heard anyone nearby - even if we tried to approach quietly and slowly - she dashed out into the tunnel as if shot from a cannon. She'd then hunker down in the tunnel until the danger had passed. Things got even worse the second night. She used pine wood shavings to completely block the tunnel that connects the new setup with the Loft - thus cutting off her access to her food, the water bottle, and the exercise wheel! It was as if she feared predators approaching from that end. I added fresh food to an upper pod that was on her "safe" end of the setup. The next night, she did dig her way through to the food...but the tunnel to the water/exercise wheel was still completely blocked. The Habitrail claims to simulate the hamster's natural environment and take advantage of its natural behavior. Sounds good in theory, but I guess Noir failed to read the Habitrail booklet. I did learn something from this costly experiment: if a hamster feels threatened, it will hunker down, even if it means giving up access to water and exercise. Noir is now safely back in her old cage, and I feel much better. Judging by her behavior - she seems like her old curious self - I think she does too.

Not suitable for a permanent mouse habitat
My mice love this but it's not big enough for a permanent home, and they need more space to burrow. But great for play time
