Can you keep toothbrushes inside this

If all you want is a storage container to place toothbrushes, this would make a great decorator item. No barbercide fluid if you store toothbrushes.

Would this hold 9 inch smoothie straws ?

It is 9 1/4 inches without the lid. The lid unit, which includes the bottom tray, is 8.5 inches from the bottom tray to the lip of the lid. You would not be able to close the lid if you put 9 in straws.

Does the insert and knob on the top come out/off? Could you replace it with a toilet brush?

Yes it comes out. A toilet brush might not work but then again if you push it hard enough it just might.
