Anyone know the difference between this and the 1A model ?? They look to be identical, but this one seems a little pricier ...

The 1A and 1B modules are identical. The difference is the display. The 1B has a gold cast color display and the world pictogram is green color. The text screened on the 1B is gold color. In conclusion the difference is minor cosmetics - a matter of personal preference. It's up to you whether the minor cosmetic difference is worth the $10 price difference. I have both and feel that the display contrast with the cheaper 1A variant is better.

Does is have a 24 hour (military time) function?

Yes. I set mine to work on 24-hour time. See pages e-9 and e-13 in the manual.

Does this watch have a timer?

Yes, it has alarm, countdown timer, stopwatch modes. However, the font size of the information is very small and hard to read. The round face model AE-1000W has a better display and a nice appearance.
