How does this detector work on wet beach sand?

If you crank up the discrimination, it will work fine. You will miss some things, especially iron, but I have found lots of coins and jewelry at the beach with mine.

i live by the beach will this affect performance ?

Not at all, I have owned metal detectors for over 30 years and this is by far the best performing detector I have ever had, better than my $1500 Whites detector!! An amazing deal

Why is there no external volume control--or is there? (If using w/o headphones)

I bought the unit for my wife and wasn't aware of the lack of volume control other then the one on the head phone. We both NEVER hunt without the headphones in place so it was never a problem.
