Would a nightlight fit in this? I’m tired of my toddler running off with it.

Yes it can fit inside but Remember There are many size of nightlight, Good luck!

I'm confused about "mounting hardware". I'm just trying to replace a snap-on cover. Would this unit be able to just snap on without hardware?

I think you're asking if the clear plastic "cover" which is part of this whole exterior outlet cover package will simply snap onto your current outlet cover plate. The answer to that question is "No." The clear plastic cover which is part of this product does not snap on. Rather, it is attached with a plastic pin which must be inserted through a hinge on the cover plate and the clear plastic cover. However, this product includes all the mounting hardware you would need to replace your entire current exterior outlet cover and the installation is quite simple.

Can you turn the faceplate from 12 to the 9 o'clock position so the outlets can be mounted sideways (=)o(=) with the box hinges on top?

Manufacturer states VERTICAL mount. Hinge is molded on the top only. OEM link: https://www.hubbell.com/hubbell/en/OHW/Electrical-Electronic/Outdoor/Boxes-Covers-Plates/MM2420C/p/1670822
