What is a good less expensive beginner sanded paper? I've never used sanded paper before and don't want to mess up on expensive sanded paper.

The uart 400 grade paper was recommended to me by two different teachers. I found it good to use. It holds the pastel well. I did buy the 600 grade which was cheaper but was not so pleased with it. I have painted with oils and watercolors and had thought that pastels were not for me but now I really like them. Have fun, they are more forgiving than watercolors and you can achieve a amazing amount of detail with them.

How does this paper differ from Pastelmat? Or is there a difference?

UArt paper has a “sandpaper” feel and comes in different grades. 400 mid grade favored by most pastel artists I know. The paper does curl a little but usually not a problem. Accepts many layers. Pastelmat is much smoother and has a firmer backing but it also holds a lot of pastel. I use both. If using pan pastels Pastelmat good choice since not abrasive to the applicators. Recommend watching YouTube videos that compare the papers.

How does this differ from ordinary sandpaper? Other than price?

The sanded surface is much finer. Ordinary sandpaper would devour a stick of pastel chalk. I tried it once and was not pleased with the outcome. Professional sanded pastel paper is worth the price.
