What to watch out for
I also have the fake book. There are many tunes which are the same in both books however it is important to note that there are variations in the chords so some songs may have the same melody but if you are using this book and playing with someone using the fake book you may have to alter some of the chords. example C7 and C6 at the start of All of Me which is not too bad but others are way different having a G-7 in the same palace as a Eflat 6 in all of me. You will also find 7ths omitted or added against the alternative books They are mostly complimentary just got to ensure you don't get any that clash. Overall played on your own this is a good book and has some songs in that are not in the fake book and vise versa

Not Perfect, But An Improvement
Many users of the old illegal Real Book have used it for many years, and become rather attached to it, warts and all. The simple fact is that in many ways this edition is a step forward, and corrects many mistakes, particularly in the chord changes of certain tunes. Since it would be very problematic to obtain the old Real Book, people ought to accustom themselves with this one. Yes, there are some changes to the list of tunes which the book contains, but contrary to a previous review the bossa nova classics Desafinado and Corcovado are both present. Corcovado is listed under it's English title 'Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars'. Desafinado is a good example of the sort of notorious mistake which this edition rectifies. In the old Real Book, four bars were missing which led to all sorts of trouble. In comparing the indexes of this 6th edition, with that of the old Real Book, I've found that there are about a dozen important pieces which are missing. These have been replaced with some good ones which weren't in the old volume, so it balances out.Below I've listed 12 tunes which are missing and are an important part of the repertoire. It could then be possible to compile a little standards supplement from other sources to insert into the book:Alone Together, Days of Wine and Roses, The Duke, A Foggy Day, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, In Your Own Sweet Way, Just Friends, Night And Day, On Green Dolphin Street, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Walkin', and What Is This Thing Called Love?Whilst the best real books remain those published by Chuck Sher, this 6th edition of The Real Book does make for an affordable collection of many of the most important pieces in the jazz repertoire.

Rather too many obscure jazz numbers
I probably should have bought one of the earlier books in this series as, although this book contains many good old songs it also has rather too much fairly marginal stuff.
