This is a gift for my elderly father for Father’s Day. He’s a steam train fanatic and he’ll love this book. He’s been to Severn Valley Railway a few times

Well written and very interesting also pictures to add interest and information, definitely has my recommendation for anyone that has an interest in the Severn Valley Railway or steam railways in general.

The book Severn valley railway history is a well written account of the railway. I found the book a good read and informative of the railway. The book is value for money pleased with the purchase.

Excellent read well planned layout

I must first declare an interest in that the author - who I do not know personally and have never met - used twelve of my photographs in his book, with my permission, of course. I have visited the Severn Valley Railway many times since 1970 but I learnt a lot from this book which struck a good balance between its history and interesting anecdotes. The book covers the building of the line, its closure and then its resurrection as a heritage line. I found the part played by the controversial MP Gerald Nabarro in its preservation particularly interesting. Although at the time I was aware that he made a very important contribution, I was not aware that he played the parts of both hero and villain at the same time! It seems that, bar for the awareness of the volunteers who had saved the line in the first place, Nabarro would have eventually run the SVR as his personal fiefdom! Fascinating. Plenty of illustrations too. The style of the writer makes it easy to read and I would recommend the book to anyone who wants a concise history of the SVR.
