Superman 4: The Return of Superman

This is in some ways the second half of the story started in Reign of the Supermen, and also the end of the death and return of Superman storyline (though there is another volume included in the series after this one). But, strangely, in a lot of ways it is vastly more devastating and intense than the Death of Superman event that kicked off this whole saga. Though the volume is primarily about the triumphant return of Superman, it comes at a huge cost--the deaths of millions of innocents. Casual DC comics readers like me are probably vaguely aware that Green Lantern's city, Coast City, suffers a horrible fate in this storyline, but it is really something else to read it unfold. The Return of Superman himself is important, yes, but it almost dwarfs in comparison to the tragedy that befalls Coast City before he comes back and manages to save the day. It's both brutal and brilliant. Superman's return would have been something to celebrate already no matter what, but his return and meting of justice against one of his most vile pretenders is made all the more satisfying because of the stakes and losses felt before his return. Really cathartic to see the Last Son of Krypton return to his rightful place, and a brilliant end to this storyline (again, excluding one more volume that acts as a coda).

Comparing the return with the reign, death and funeral parts, this one is the best. Death is simple and clean, you can even say it's a bit boring apart from the tragic event itself. Funeral is heavy with sadness and depressing. Reign is "here's four new characters, guys, whadda ya think?" And return is just good action comics. One of the four Supermen turns out to be a traitor and blows up Coast City. In the weeks (I think) following the explosion it's rebuilt as Engine City by the conspirators with the insane plan to pull Earth from orbit. It's up to the heroes to stop them. All this serves as a bombastic backdrop to great action and superheroes dramatically punching each other through the walls. Good stuff.

Pretty awesome. I've always enjoyed this storyline and it has aged just fine. Great artwork and an interesting, unpredictable story. Would have been nice to have more background on the main villain but that's okay. Recommended!

Love the way you put the blood line series with the return of superman.

Bought Death of Superman for my son for Christmas and he enjoyed them so much (like I did when it first came out) that I wanted to give him the follow up Trades. Great story if you're trying to get the kids of the electronics

The real Superman is back!.. tells how Superman was able to return and the fate of the 4 Supermen who filled-in during his absence.. Got this big volume on sale and it was worth it..

Great comic and deal

Enjoyed the Death of Superman and was really interested in this as it details the Man of Steel’s rise from the ashes however the cover is the only decent thing about this product. Art style is horrible and the story is way too slow as it’s constantly focusing on the other “Supermen” and not Clark Kent’s recovery and his return.

Dopo l'improbabile comparsa di emuli a loro insaputa ecco il ritorno di Superman dagli inferi.E' cambiato? E' sempre lo stesso di un tempo? Volume bellissimo. Dovrebbero stamparne di più, anche attingendo dal passato. E se per Batman è facile trovar storie degli anni 80, per Superman è praticamente impossibile.
