Is this suitable for work on HGVs?

No it’s more a diy impact wrench I would recommend something heavier duty found to be underpowered hope this helps

I can't stop air from coming out of the bottom of the tool. I've even used some plumbers tape to seal the thread. Is this normal?

Hi, Most air tool leaks come from the snap connectors rather that the thread on the tool. There are several different sizes of connector and not all are of good quality. I suggest oiling the female connector on the air hose as this can stick open at an odd angle and leak a lot if compressed air. I found this air tool to be an excellent addition to my car tools.

How many CFM compressor do i need to operate the impact wrench?

I run the gun on 14.5 cfm displacement compressor with a 100litre resovoir at 6bar works fine
