Who doesn't love cake? There's perhaps no dessert that makes you feel more special. It's how we celebrate birthdays and graduations. It's the rarified treat at engagement parties and weddings-and the way we welcome old friends and new babies. Whether it's a cupcake with coffee at the neighbor's house or a three-layer slice at the end of an extravagant meal, cake is a sweet, simple indulgence that makes you feel loved and a little better about the world. And who knows more about cakes than Southern Living , the magazine that outdoes itself every year with new pedestal-topping cakes? Its trusted kitchens and pages have launched or popularized some of the South's-and America's-most iconic and decadent cakes, from Hummingbird Cake to Red Velvet Cupcakes. Review: Southern Cakes at Their Best! - Love this book! All together in one book are vintage Southern Living cake recipes with new recipes. In the first several pages are baking tips just for cakes and very handy frosting tips and techniques. The cake recipes range from mini cakes, layer cakes to bundts and pound cakes. What I liked was there are PICTURES for every recipe. These days it's essential to have pictures enabling the reader to see how the recipe should look when complete. Also, the recipes only require standard bakeware! Huge plus as I don't need to go buy a new pan just to use the book. Also the majority of recipes have a tip or technique to help you. Love the book and enjoy having a little southern flair to my desserts! Review: A compilation of old favorites along with some new! - I have to say that I love this Southern Cake Book but that is only based on me looking at the recipes. I bought two of these as gifts, so I haven't used them, but I do like the "paperback" feel. There are tons of recipes in this book that are ones we remember from the past, while a spin on others to give them an updated version. I am hoping the individuals I purchased these for make many of the recipes and that I can at least try a few!

Delicious is an understatement, but watch out for erros in directions and ingredients
Is it possible to be tempted to try EVERY recipe in in cook book? If the books the The Southern Cake Book -2014 then the answer is yes!! When I first get a cook book I usually flip through the pages and use sticky notes to mark the select few that I want to try, but with this book I was marking every page. I couldn't believe it. Every recipe has a stunning photograph to tempt and tantalize you. Kudos to the photo and design team, they even made the strange combinations like Pineapple Upside-Down Carrot Cake look like a work of art. After much agonizing I finally decided to try The Amaretto-Almond Pound Cake first. It is in the oven now, and everyone is drooling over the aroma. If it tastes half as good as it smells, it will be unbelievable. So I highly recommend this book to the bakers and non-bakers alike. Even if you don't like to bake, this book would look great as a coffee table art. My only negative about the book is the cover. It is not really a hardback, more like a rigid soft cover. I've only had the book a few days and already the edges are bent and compressed. But regardless of the cover, what is inside is fabulous. Update: Does Southern Living have an errata list showing the errors in their cook books? I just made the Amaretto Almond Pound Cake and it was delicious. More than delicious it was fabulous, but I had a problem with the glaze. I googled the recipe and found the official Southern Living recipe listed on MyRecipe dot-you-know-what. And guess what? The directions for making the glaze was vastly different in the online version compared to the printed version. The online version was much more in depth and complete. So before starting one of these recipes, check the online version for any changes/corrections/differences. Update (7-4-2014) - Tried the Mississippi Mud Cupcakes - They were good but a little dry. Add some oil to the batter, double the amount of chopped chocolate in the batter, and bake for less time. Update (7-6-2014) - Tried the Strawberry Shortcake and didn't like it all. It looked really good, but just didn't like the taste of the cake/biscuit. Books says to bake at 450 for 8-10 minutes. Online version says to bake at 300 for 40-45 minutes. Hummm...

Sweet Dreams!
I should start this review by stating that I have over 600 cookbooks. Southern Living cookbooks are always great but this one stands out. I love to bake and cakes are my favorite things to make. I have probably found a dozen recipes that I can't wait to try and I only got the book today. All the recipes are accompanied by photos. Exceptional cookbook!

Definitely a book full of classic recipes
This is a cookbook full of classic cake recipes. I make the luscious lemon cake cake and it is delicious. Iโve also used the marshmallow cream cheese frosting recipe. It was easy to make and turned out perfectly. All directions are accurate and easy to follow. I recommend this book for bakers who enjoy traditional recipes. Lots of pictures make this an enjoyable read. If youโre hoping to find new & innovative cake tricks, this isnโt the book for you.

Perfect gift for bride to be!
I gave this book as part of a cake themed shower gift with a Lenox first Christmas wedding cake ornament, novelty cake sayings dish and tea towels, a cake themed apron with the bride's new Mrs. Name, and a sterling silver cake serving set. Upon perusal of the book, I will definitely buy one for myself as the recipes look amazing. From personal experience, SL has THE. BEST. CAKE. RECIPES. by far.

It has beautiful yumie Pictures of the cakes and it pretty enough to put on your coffee table, which is where my copy is! Love the old fashion cakes. I would have preferred it have a hard back book cover, but you can't have everything. Arrive on time and in good condition. Nice book.

which just ain't cool. Something like that should be clearly specified in ...
I'm giving this cookbook a lower rating because it contains several recipes that include boxed cake mix, which just ain't cool. Something like that should be clearly specified in the title of the book. At any rate, there is a wide selection of interesting recipes that incorporate a variety of fruits and flavour profiles, which is nice...there's something in there for everyone! But like most southern recipes, you'll probably need to pull back on the sugar content for a lot of these recipes or add some salt to tone it down.
