are the handle grips odor free?

I’ve never had a problem with them developing an odor. Your hands are not always on the ‘grips’ anyway: sometimes it’s between your knees or ankles. Theoretically, you should be gripping the ring lightly or even with the palm of your hands. Fwiw, the handle grips are a squishy substance - not hard plastic.

What is this made of? Looking for steel & rubber vs. plastic.

It feels like a metal ring (it is covered with a rubbery sleeve); the pads/handles are a very thick pad.

Softer ring, gives really nice feedback as you compress it

My Physiotherapist recommended a fitness circle for shoulder rehab and I was nervous to purchase because some of them have very high resistance. This one is very compressible even with significant deficits, but it provides enough resistance that I use it successfully for leg work too. I will purchase something with more resistance in the future when needed but for now, this ring has been serving all of my athletic needs and I use it multiple times a week on the ice and off ice for figure skating.
