Best book for little ocean lovers
My 3 year old is obsessed with deep water creatures and this book is the best I've found. It takes little ones on a real journey from the surface to the deepest parts of the ocean and contains a lot of good information as well. Very engaging and lovely book. Good for older ages as well.

Sea facts and unusual paper-art appeals to young avid readers
After reading reviews of this book on Amazon, I ordered it for my grandson, age 11, who is interested in sea life and in paper artwork. When I first flipped through this book, I thought that some of the art plus the increasingly darker pages might not appeal to a kid. I was wrong. When my grandson started looking at it and reading it, he started telling me about interesting facts he was learning that he hadn't seen in other sea life books or articles; he also thinks it's "cool" that pages get darker as they show deeper parts of the ocean. He has read it several times and keeps it accessible on my coffee table rather than in his bookcase. This book is a winner. I'll be ordering another copy to be shipped to my granddaughters (ages 5 and 8), who live in CA and go once or twice a year to a hugh aquarium.

Shows the depths of the sea
As you go down in the ocean you see the different creatures there. This is a book I wish I had as a kid. Even has some pages identical to the previous so you can see lights on versus natural with the glowing features on the animals. Now the pages don't glow in the dark, but you still get a good idea.

Not Great but Not Bad
3.5 starsA very informative book with good illustrations. The book content itself is very factual, quite dry. I thought it would be written as a story with facts included. Not written that way at all. Not a book my kids will read again and again. Definitely had some trouble holding my children's attention until the end. Overall, not great but not bad.

This is my 4YO’s favorite book. It’s a lot of info and not geared towards that age, but he loves deep sea animals and often we read non fiction books above his age level. The book travels down from the surface to the bottom of the sea and discusses various animals at each zone. This author never disappoints.

The New York Times was right (for a change)
A read a review of this book in the New York Times Book Review and decided that it would be a good buy for my grand daughter. I always review these purchases myself to see how well I agree with the Times and in this case I do. I also always buy new book on Amazon and save a trip to the local book store (too bad bookstores!) I cautioned my daughter that when she reads this with my grand daughter that she should emphasize that the fantastic creatures featured in this book really do exist. With the many cartoon characters spewed at us on TV, one has to separate fiction from reality for the innocent. I'm awaiting my grand daughter's reaction to this informative book.

Aside from having awesome artwork, this book does a really good job ...
Aside from having awesome artwork, this book does a really good job of instilling a sense of wonder about just how deep the oceans are. My kids (5 and 8) ask me to read this most nights now. Some nights we end up staying up way too late because they spend 5 minutes per page geeking out on the creatures, immense pressures, and "what if" scenarios.

This Book is Fabulous
This book is a winner. I'm delighted with the illustrations; even a science-minded student will appreciate Jenkins' beautiful creations. Next, the scale on the right side of every two-page spread is such a great idea. It's the perfect way to show how little of the ocean is sunlit and how much, much more of it is dark and almost unknown. Finally, I really like the way Jenkins gives just enough information about the creatures on each page as we "travel" deeper, but then at the back of the book has a reference section for readers who hunger for more detail. This book has something for everyone in the family!

Visually stunning and educational!
I purchased this book as my ks1 class are currently learning about sea creatures. However on it's arrival it had me completely hooked. I love how it takes the reader on a journey under the sea showing the different animals you encounter at different depths and giving a few facts about each. Although admittedly too advanced for my class they have enjoyed looking through the pictures. Highly recommend to older children with an interest in sea creatures.
