Is this product's magnet strong enough to penetrate the safe's interior carpeting and still be effective?

No, I have mine on the outside of my safe. It is a temporary rifle rest that holds them while you get others out. I also keep one in my car to use when I shoot in the country. I can lean them up with it, without scratching up my cars finish.

Will a hot barrel melt rubber? I'm looking to use this on the range, placing it on my truck to keep guns from falling.

Haven't tried this particular product with a hot barrel, that being said lots of Rounds down range will make a barrel extremely hot and can melt rubber and plastic, recommend setting barrel on sand bag pointed down range till somewhat coolled off.

is there a protective covering over the magnet so that I can safely place it on the outside of my truck to hold rifles at the range?

there is a thin clear coating over the magnet. But I would be cautious if my truck was dirty. I have had to reglue the magnet once on each unit but once I did that I have had no problems.

It looks like there are 2 screw holes on either end, can you secure this to the wall with screws?

Nope. They are not real screws. They are molded plastic.
