Q: How does it compare to SE846?

I happen to have both - got both of them in like-new conditions at a bargain price on Reddit & Head-fi. 1. Price - * SE846 is $900 retail & around $500 - 650 in used market. (I've seen them go on sale for as low as $300 on Reddit) * IER-Z1R is $1700 retail & around $1200 - 1450. - The Z1R is more expensive, but also the price doesn't drop as drastically. Even the used ones are hard to find. 2. Sound Quality - * I wouldn't say Z1R's sound quality is 2x of that of the SE846s. At most 10-15% difference? Z1R has a much a bit punchier bass and slightly more exciting sound signature. But again, the difference could not be worth the price difference for some. 3. Comfort - SE846 clearly wins here. Z1R is a big IEM with sharp metal edges. I can go all day with SE846 on (sometimes would even forget I have them on - that's how comfortable they are for me) but with Z1R, I have to be prepared to tolerate some pain for pleasurable. (I'm still talking about an IEM lol) All in all, the Z1Rs are great pair of IEMs that are worthy of their flagship title. There's no denying that Z1Rs really make any audio experience very exciting. However, I'm pretty certain almost everyone out there (unless you are very particular about your audio) will be more than content with SE846 as a main audio driver.

Q: Is ier z1r 4.4 headphones better than 3.5?

Guess you are asking if you connect with 4.4 mm connector. It depends on the amp you are connecting, 4.4 mm is balanced output for an amp and it can deliver more power than the unbalanced 3.5 mm, In my case I use it with luxury & Precision w2 with balanced output and noticed I cannot go beyond 70, but with 3.5 I can go beyond 75. This difference is even clear if you use it with Sony Walkman or Sony amp, the balanced 4.4 sounds louder and cleaner. The good thing about z1r that works pretty good with a good amp which is not true for most of the iem. So if you plan to use it with a good amp or Sony Walkman the answer is yes.

It’s release and Amazon sold a lot. I purchased it 2 months back, probably it is on backorder. Don’t think Sony will discontinue such a popular product soon.

Q: How does the sound compare to the over ear version?

They are a completely different experience than an over ear headphone.
