I might be able to help you here, I work with small generators I have built, and in most respects a motor wired with a rotating armature, (the guy in the middle that is the actual coil for a motor that spins within the magnetic field created by either permanent magnets or electromagnets. The simple fact is this, a moving coil, or a moving magnet, depending upon design creates magnetic induction, that is a magnet and a coil that move at a 90° right angle to each other will induce a measurable electric current, and no, I refuse to get into theories or equations, I just wish to offer a simple explanation.

So, your motor/generator can operate forwards and backwards, it's within the same theory but different in the actions taking place. When you feed electricity into the motor it runs because around the casing of the rotor, electromagnets, (or permanent magnets) creates a magnetic field at right angles to the rotor itself, input power supplies the voltaic force, and the magnets supply the necessary magnetic field. When used as a generator, the exact opposite happens, the rotor is now turned by some mechanical force and as the rotor turns within the magnets magnetic induction induces a current, so no electricity in to be a generator, just enough mechanical force to turn it at the proper speed. So if you feed it juice, within specifications of course, the magnets and the rotors will force against each other and turn the motor over, if you use mechanical force to turn the motor, it is no longer a motor, but a generator, with coils and magnets interacting to produce magnetic induction and the product of that induction can be drained from the coil/rotor assembly as it produces electricity.

I've added a video, this is a simple project. I'm always looking for ways to increase the voltage in versus the voltage out. What you see is a completely homemade generator, it is powered by a simple 3 volt hobby motor that costs about 50 cents, and is run by two AA batteries. As for the magnet and the coil, the coil was hand wound using 700 ft of 
26 AWG enameled solid copper wire. The magnet, a single unit comprising a single square block neodymium grade N52 magnet, the weight was just shy of half a pound, and required good solid mounting and balancing, as the hobby motor used in a direct drive scenario, no belts, pulleys, or gears, the output shaft of the mini motor is connected directly to the magnet itself, the motor has a rated speed of 15,000 RPM, but under such a load for such a small motor the output shaft spins around 3,000 RPM,

Here's the fun numbers, input voltage, 3 volts via two AA batteries, the resulting output voltage was 30 volts unloaded, that's a 10X gain, fully loaded it gives a consistent 20 volts, or a 6X+ gain from the input voltage. I don't know how many LEDs this thing will light, I stopped stringing them together in series around 50 LEDs, and it didn't look tired at all with this load.

Watch the video, it's a no bull, straight up, completely homemade generator that doesn't give you "free electricity" (I'd like to talk to this guy about his wild claims of free electricity generators, the subject of that conversation would definitely fall within the laws of thermodynamics, sheesh, what a doofus)

Yes and just because we needed to know it will handle 54 volts but very quickly started to overheat.

Dumb question... how loud does this little motor get? specifically the lowest voltage (3v)?
