At first I didn't like it
But after reading many other books on the subject this one is actually my go to. Maybe not the best for straight up noobs but best all around book on the subject in my opinion.

A Treat! A delight ...
... and a complete guide to walk me through the bowl carving process. But that isn't the full extent of this marvelous book as there is much supplemental information. From reading the book I feel Ms Byrd sought to give her best, and succeeded! I look forward to her future writings.I'm a late 70's want-to-be carver; this to be my winter work. A housing project down the road will provide inventory once they start clearing the land. (Durham, NC is a fine place, but, Oh, how suddenly I miss Tulsa's Green Dump.) With the detailed and informative list of useful tools I'm now gathering a beginner's tool box. I appreciate Ms Byrd and this book.

Kindle version formatting is garbage!
If you’re buying this for Kindle, don’t, until the formatting issues are corrected. The info might be great but you can’t read it in it’s current state.

A wonderful introduction *and* a long-term reference - Don't skip the "self care" part!
This is a truly comprehensive guide for anyone interested in carving bowls by hand. There is a wealth of information for beginners (like me.) A few months and a couple of crude bowls later, I am returning to its pages again and again and/or *really* reading parts I skimmed the first time. That wasn't Ms. Byrd's fault. She keeps the text light, clear, and witty. There are quick essentials for getting started, but there are also clues as to what carvers will find as they delve deeper into the craft. I will keep this book handy for a long time. Do NOT skip the chapter on "self care." There is some hard-won wisdom there. Don't get injured by over-enthusiasm and knock you out of the craft just as you are getting into it!

Worth every dime!
I had carved 3 or 4 bowls prior to buying this book based on information from the web and magazine articles, so I had some basics down. Danielle covers the whole process from sourcing fresh wood to finished product. The book is organized a little differently than other how-to books, which I found really refreshing and kept me engaged. She included valuable information on taking care of your hands and body through the process. Thoughtfully written to help a newcomer into bowl carving. She has a knack of making you hear her words off the written page, as though she were in the same room talking directly to you.

Danielle has shared an enormous amount of information in this book. Not just how to carve a bowl, but knowledge about wood, tools and even exercises to protect your body.
