497595 Starter Motor Replaces 5406 H, 394805, 392749

Genuine B&S Starter and Fit perfect on my 1989 MTD Mower with the B&S 12hp 281707 IC Engine. New Life for my 33 Year Old MTD Mower with the B&S Engine. Function's Perfect & A Really Good Price imo. I also got a New Oregon Solenoid to go along with the New Starter because the Original Solenoid was also 33 year's old. Motor Start's up like New again.

Replaced the starter in my FIL zero turn. Worked like a champ and authentic Briggs and Stratton.

This was a great replacement for my old snapper 28 inch rider.

Yesterday I pushed the riding mower out of the shed to fire it up for the first time this season. Turn key, dead - no click, no nothing. Charged battery for an hour, try again, get an awful whining. Take shroud off, watch the starter, and it's spinning, but the sprocket isn't spinning up and engaging. Taking the starter out, clearly the main problem is hardened grease on the spindle the sprocket spins up. It's preventing it from working. I could have probably cleaned it and had it working again, but some of the teeth were also worn down. Since it is 15 years old, I figured I may as well just purchase a new one. Now, I saw many replacements that were inexpensive. However most of the reviews pointed out that they were terrible quality, not lasting very long at all before having to replace again. So, I decided to just buy the B&S replacement. The price at my local big box store was 50% more than here, so it was a good deal. Kudos to Amazon delivering at 7am this morning - I ordered yesterday afternoon! This allowed me to get it installed in the morning, and get a good amount mowed before the rain began today. This is an original B&S OEM part - it was in a B&S box.

I purchased this for my 88 year old father. It was delivered the next morning, which is good because the man is not known for his patience. He was able to take everything apart and install the new charger by himself. He couldn't be happier. He says it's like having a new mower. Side note: he's been having trouble with his teeth and is going to have to get dentures, he really needed a win, and this was it.

Fit right on but was an inch shorter than the original. Cranks over just fine. Only 4 stars because it hasn't past the test of time yet.

I got the package before noon and before I knew it, I had taken the old starter off and had the new one on and wired but i forgot to order the new solenoid. I had bought a new battery a few days ago so i installed it and decided to bypass the solenoid with a ?????????(just to keep amateurs safe) and that 15 year old motor started spinning as if it was 5 minutes old again, with no hesitation, and that mounting bracket is almost beyond belief that they made it so much thicker for the torque, so much relief not to have to worry about at least that.

Made by Briggs and Stratton, this part costs considerably more than the Chinese look-alikes, but if your old mower needs a new starter and your plan is to hold onto the mower a year or longer, buy this one. Why? See the part on top of the starter, the disc-shaped piece with teeth all around its circumference? That's the starter's pinion gear. It should be made of metal. On the Briggs and Stratton starter it is made of metal. On the Chinese imports it's apt to be plastic. A pinion gear made of plastic will not last. Wears down to an ugly nub in short order. Ask me how I know.

Exactly what my brother needed for his ride on lawn mower. Genuine part at a decent price.

Starter Motor for my Craftsman Yard Tractor. Fitted with no problem, Genuine B & S OEM replacement. A bit more expensive but it was here in two days! Tractor now starts every time, didn't look to be much wrong with the old starter, except that the bendix gear would stick in the engaged position, maybe it was just getting old. This new one works great!
