Is this compatible with Asus crosshair vi hero please?

Hi Jenna, Your motherboard has 1x M.2 slot which supports this ssd but it will not provide the full speed interface necessary to achieve its full potential as it is only PCIe 3.0 and the 980PRO is PCIe 4.0. That means that the 980PRO will still be fully compatible (might need to update the motherboard bios though) but it will only run at PCIe 3.0 speeds. That does not mean it won’t be fast, actually I doubt you will even notice any difference on a daily basis between PCIe 3.0 and 4.0. Hope this helps. Take care!

In the description title it says pcie 4.0 but in the “about this item” text it says pcie 3.0. Which is it?

PCI 4.0. It’s needed for those speeds. I have the 2TB version and it’s blisteringly fast. It also clearly shows 4.0 on the item itself if you look at the photos.

Are there any suitable external housings which could take this m.2 pcie 4.0 card and allow it to work as an external ssd (thunderbolt) at full speed?

If this is about the 1TB 980 then I think that SSD is PCIe 3.0 not 4.0 . Downside it's not as fast as you might have hoped, upside its max speeds are probably within the limits of Thunderbolt. Box says 'read speed up to 3500MB/s'
