How does this work with an extra tight bead?

Work great on tight or loose bead. The new style Speed Lever is beefier and is easier to use then the old style.

Newbie with hybrid road bike. i notice many tire levers sold in pairs. do i need to order two of these crankbrothers speedier tire levers or one?

I have never needed more than one. The functionality of this thing is that once you hook it underneath the tire, it slides along the rim to unseat the rest of the tire, and I have never had a tire fight this process. Best lever ever. Full stop.

Will this be large enough for a one wheel tire?

Not sure exactly what you are asking... This works as a stronger, heavier bicycle tire lever which is especially helpful when dealing with extra tight fitting tires. It would work with any size bicycle tire, but I use mine primarily for 700C, 29 and 26 inch.
