Q: will this light work with chuggington wooden trains?

I would think so ! It is stand alone and lights when button is pushed !

Q: how tall does it stand? It says 6" in the description. I didn't think that could be right, that would be much too huge for the wooden trains.

I didn't actually measure it but it looked 6 inches and it is hefty (compared to the set of much littler crossing guards I also bought made by same company, I think)

Q: Can this be used on its own? Does it stand up sturdily or topple over easily. Can it be used without the train set?

It can definitely be used without the train set. I think it stands up reasonably well.

Q: Why does this break so quickly? Got one in May; 3 weeks later button stopped working. Amazon replaced; 5 weeks later same issue

My son of 6 has 2 of these and never has had ANY issue with them. They have worked out great.

Yay!

Such a cute addition to our sons train sets! Good quality, perfect size and adds to the fun! The only slightly disappointing part is you can’t control when the light changes it just kind of changes at random but honestly it’s not much of an issue. Otherwise we’re pretty satisfied!

The green, yellow, red lights work automatically if you press the little button.The light needs 2pcs of LR44H battery to work (which is included in the product)

This is a cute addition to any brio set, but if you're going for accuracy the lights are the wrong way up! Lol.
