Allen Sports Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack, Model 102DB, Black/ Silver, 23 x 15 x 4 inches

Before I get into the model specifics here's some of my general insight. 1. Seems to be a high-quality product. Well constructed and sturdy. The two top brackets that attaches to the car are NOT coated with anything other than paint. I think I'm going to have to come up with something to help protect my car's paint where it attached to the area just above my back window. Maybe some tape or some of the rubberized spray you can find at local hardware stores. 2. The only area that come in to contact WITH THE BIKE ITSELF are the two rubber brackets that the top bar of the frame sit on. I'm not sure if that rubber will FULLY protect the bike below the bar. It's not very soft and I think I'm going to have to wrap by crossmember with something to protect the finish on my bike. The brackets that tighten around and hold the bike to the carrier is nothing more that a manual pull strap. While it seems to hold the bike well I don't really care for the strap mechanism and is another reason I need to come up with a wrap for my frame. It's made of plastic and although it's not metal, it looks like it could do some damage to the frame if going on a longer trip. 3. The metal bars that comprise most of this unit seem to be more that strong enough to handle the weight of two bikes. 4. It holds the bike securely and is pretty quick to attach to the vehicle. Now the vehicle specifics. I read different reviews and couldn't determine if this rack would work with my Prius. The Mfg. web site said the only one that would fit was the 3 bike model. (another $40+ dollars) Others, who have tried to use this claimed success. Well, I claim success as well with an asterisk. Why?? The bottom bracket that rests on the back of the car is adjustable up and down. When I tried full extension down part of the metal bar came way to close to the painted plastic/fiberglass area just above the license plate. I adjusted the bar above that area but, like others mentioned, it rides on the Prius decal....but just a little bit. I don't think this is a deal breaker and this part of the car won't be damaged. For one...It's one of the anchor points that has a very soft and pliable foam covering. And, it only touches the outer edges of the decal. For the initial install I attached the bottom strap to the bottom of the car even though there is no metal down there to attach it to. (a bit flimsy) I plan on using one of the alternate methods described in the instructions that utilizes the bottom of the hatchback instead of the underside of the car. This change should also allow me to open by hatchback without taking the rack off of my car. I think. ;-) (I hope) I have a few trips planned and I'll post an update down the road and adjust my rating if need be. I think this is a very solid rack and it will provide years of reliable service. Cheers.

I'll also upload photos of the rack on my car and it's packaging momentarily. The link for the fit list: [...] I purchased this rack to aid me in moving from Oregon to Colorado. I'll update the review as time goes on. ----------------------------- 2011-June: First impressions (duration of ownership: 1 day; driven around town with one bike to test it): The rack fit well on my 1989 Toyota Corolla All-Trac station wagon, and feels very secure. I am using it for a single bike (on the innermost mount), and using the additional mounts for a spare wheel and tires, since I don't need the extra capacity at the moment. The rack feels sturdy, and I believe its stated 100 pound load capacity. The rack mounts easily (it took me a few minutes to set up the first time, and it should only take a minute or two in the future) and holds the bike in place securely. I very strongly recommend putting some sort of protection (see photos on the product page) between the metal hooks and the paint of your car (obviously) since the metal could scrape it off. Mounting the rack works well if you first fit the top hooks, then (while the rack dangles from the top straps) mount the bottom hooks. Don't forget padding (I used an old rag)! The horizontal bars that make contact with the car are very well padded (with ~3/4 inch thick foam rubber), and have a bend in the middle such that the bar *should* avoid contacting the paint of your car. Still, if you're worried: padding is a good idea. I hooked everything onto my back hatch (both the bottom and top hooks), and I am not able to open and close it when the rack is in place. Also, the rack slightly impairs visibility (see photo) when in reverse, as one would expect. Overall, it seems sturdy and mounts easily. See the photos I've uploaded for more info. ----------------------------- 2011-July: 1200 Miles later I wholeheartedly approve of this rack's performance. I drove from Portland, OR to Boulder, CO with this thing on the entire time, and it did no damage to my car whatsoever. It held my bike and some tires very securely for the entire trip - three days of HOT weather (as in Moab, UT in mid-July hot... so very hot). I kept checking it out of paranoia, but I never needed to tighten it. Thus I give the rack 5 stars. Caveats: I haven't used it with more than two bikes at a time as of now. I'll keep this review up to date as I own and use the rack longer. For now, it's stored in my closet with no signs of damage from the trip... save for a little dust :) -----------------------------

Originally bought around January of 09. Read through to get the whole story. I purchased this to be able to combine car (97 Saturn SL1) and bike commuting. So far, so good. 4 days/week, I drive near work, then bike into (and around) my workplace. My commute is about 20 minutes, with about 10 minutes of freeway driving. In the few months I have used this, I have had no major issues. The bike does not move much, except the front wheel. I have not found a good way of securing this. Currently, I use my U-lock to lock the wheel and bike frame to the rack frame. This keeps the tire from hitting the car, but there is some motion. I've used bungee cords, which kept the wheel very stable, but the bungees were slowly getting shredded. Otherwise very little motion. So little that it has twice stayed in place when I forgot to strap it down (including once where I drove for 2 - 3 miles on the freeway)! The straps can be done/undone fairly quickly. It takes me about 1 minute to mount/dismount the bike. A clasp, or something similar, might be quicker, but these do work fine. It takes a little bit to mount/dismount the rack, but really, not all that long (I've only done it once ... it's fairly intuitive). The short straps for clamping bikes do flap in the wind, and that is occasionally a little distracting when I look in the rear-view mirror, but overall I do not find the rack or rack with bike to be much of a visual issue. Have not used it on a long trek yet, or with multiple bikes (I will try to remember to update when I do). I did notice that it seemed to leave a mark on top of my trunk where the foam pad rests. I did not try to remove it, so it could be a non-permanent mark. UPDATE 4/28/09: Definitely leaving a mark from the middle of the bar on the trunk. Would encourage folks to add some protection in that location. I still mostly use this for short trips. Did two slightly longer trips (~100 miles each way) without removing the bike in between, and it needed no tightening. This was also through the giant wind tunnel that is the San Gorgonio Mountain Pass in Southern California near Palm Springs ... and the wind was RAGING on the way back. UPDATE 9/7/09: Mark on the car: it is due to the trunk curving, but the bike-rack bar being straight and with padding only at the ends. I would strongly encourage adding padding in the middle. Used it for a camping trip with two full-sized bicycles and one child bicycle. Worked fairly well, although I did get some slippage, and the bikes were definitely bouncing (even on the way back, when I was more careful about tightening straps). UPDATE 6/10/10: My bike rack broke today. One of the straps connected to the trunk just broke, about two inches from the hook. A couple of things to note with this ... I have been using this rack for a year and a half, and about 99% of the time it is outside on my car in a desert-like environment (lots of heat and sun, a little bit of water). Today, I arrived at work and one of the straps had broken. The good news: the bike did not fall off. The one side that broke had slipped to the back of the trunk, but it all stayed on. Also, there is enough strap that I can just tie the strap to the hook, and that held for the drive home, even under 70 MPH strain. Also, all of the rubber elements on the rack look like crap now. They have sort of "bubbled" in the sun. It doesn't have a lot, so not a big deal. This happened probably in about the first 6 months or so. FINAL UPDATE 8/18/10: Well, within another month of the first strap breaking, two more did. Honestly, all of the straps were seeming a little brittle. Probably,this was caused by continued exposure to the elements. So, if this is a bike rack you plan to leave on your car, 1.5 years might be it's effective life use. I had thought about contacting Allen to see if I could get new straps under their warranty, but the day after the third strap broke i found a nive replacement rack for $5 at a garage sale. OKAY - ONE MORE UPDATE 10/3/11: In looking at teh picture, it appears the design may have changed. My rack had a straight bar across the trunk, and this one appears to be curved. I did not have issues with the small metal rods coming out, but given some of the recent reviews, it's certainly something I'd look into if I was purchasing this.

I have been considering getting a bicycle rack for my car, but they were always more money than I wanted to pay. So, after reading the reviews on Amazon, I was pretty excited to get this Allen 2-bike trunk rack. I was a little leery of getting a rack that just straps on to the back of your car, but after checking some of the more expensive models, I discovered that pretty much all trunk racks were this way. Installation couldn't be easier, just hook the hooks on the back of your trunk (my car is a 2012 Kia Rio), tighten, and put your bike on. I keep my rack in the trunk when I don't have a bike on it, just so it doesn't walk away. It doesn't take up too much trunk space and I haven't run into a situation where it was in the way. I have used the rack for my 5 year old's 12 inch bike, my 7 year old's 18 inch bike, a 55cm road bike, and a 23 inch mountain Bike. It holds all the bikes securely (though no more than two at a time!). I used the rack for a 1200 mile round trip and had no issues. I had two bikes on it and they looked like they belonged there. The 2 pieces of advice I would have for people who would use this rack would be: 1. don't pull the straps too tight. I kept pulling the straps tight on my trip because I was concerned that my bikes would fall off. When I got to my destination and took the rack off, my trunk lid popped back into place. I had tightened the straps so much they made the metal of the lid bend! No permanent damage was done, but it's not something that I would want to keep doing. 2. always make sure the pads are in contact with the car. On a short trip, bringing my daughter's bike back from her school, I noticed a black mark on my car where the rack had come in contact with my car. Luckily, it was the paint from the rack and not a scuff on my car. But if the trip was longer, it might have done more damage. The pad slid out of position and the rack was metal to metal with the car. Overall, I would recommend this rack to anybody who needs to carry bikes on their car. The amount of time and effort that I save from having to take the wheels off my bike and stick it in the trunk any time I need to go somewhere with my bike and my car is well worth the cost of the rack.

I've had this trunk mount rack for six years now and it is still holding strong. It's very easy to install and remove on your vehicle. I have a Toyota Corolla. It easily holds two cruiser bikes which is what we ride with. It keeps the bikes secure. Folds up enough to store in a small closet.

This is a review for a 3 bikes version. The assembly is easy, it was a bit unclear how to tie the top strap, since it was initially tied to the center of the rack and it was difficult to understand which one is the “top” strap. Other than that it works well on gen 3 Prius. The only thing is that the lower bracket rests on the license plate, which I think is fine. And another issue (with Prius) is that it doesn’t have anything metal underneath the rear bumper so I attached the anchors to the bottom of the hatch. But it’s fine for me. My car, so as most of gen 3 Priuses are so old right now, I don’t care if it gets scratched at all. The biggest problem is that the 3 bikes version can fit only 2.5 bikes, i.e. two adult bikes and one kids bike. The bike brackets are spaced too close to each other so I couldn’t fit two adult bikes next to each other. Instead, I put kid’s bike in between. The best part is that the trunk opens and closes without an issue! Overall I give this rack 3 stars because in my case there is no way you can fit 3 bikes on it.

I had gotten a new bike, done research on which bike rack type (roof or trunk) would be best for me. I have a 08 focus, and I decided on a trunk rack for a few reasons: 1) Im not the tallest person, so it would be easier to work with, 2) easy assembly, and 3) they were more in my price range. So, I had never bought a bike rack before, and I did a lot of reading reviews and comparing this to other more pricey bike racks. Everything has a few bad feedbacks, but most of the ones I read on this bike rack were human error. For example, one review stated that the grey foam that goes against the top of the trunk burned marks into the paint. I have been wiping off or cleaning the areas that the bike rack contact the car, this prevents friction burning debris and dirt into the paint, thus no markings after removal. Another review stated that the bike moved a lot when the car was moving, that the pedals and front wheel dented and scratched the car. I used Velcro straps to secure the tires from moving to the bike frame, and put wool socks on the pedals that would possibly come in contact with the car. To keep the bike(s) from swinging in the cradle, I took a large strap and wrapped it around the bike(s) and against the bottom of the rack, putting rags between the bike and rack where they would rub to prevent damage. I've had my boyfriend's and my bikes on the back of my car on trips that are mainly up in speeds between 55 and 75 mph, and have no problems. I do not recommend making sharp and quick turns like a maniac. I don't think we'd want to find out if that would affect the bikes either. I bought this bike rack back in early June and I have no regrets. It is perfect for my needs, and I wouldn't think of having anything else!! I hope this advice was helpful!! Good luck!!

Although I use Amazon reviews all the time, I have never written one before; but I have had one of the most unbelieveable experiences of my life with this company. The rack is fab. Works great, easy, no wobble, no panic on the road, great directions for installation. It's 100% assembled when it arrives, all you have to do is hook it up to your vehicle. As for Allen Racks the company? Holy cow. Let me tell ya ~ I bought one to use for my and my 2 kids' bikes while we went on vacation. It was about a 150 mile drive. Upon arrival, I find that one of the foam bottom foot protectors has split, nearly all the way thru. Well, bummer, but no matter, the weight of the bikes will keep it in place, even if it splits completely. But, seeing the "lifetime warranty" stamp on the box, I thought I'd let Allen know the problem and see what it would take to fix it. I emailed them at 9:54 a.m. Just a simple, 5 sentence explanation of what happened and asked them to please assist in fixing the problem. 2 minutes later, I received a reply that they're sorry for the problem and if I could send them my mailing address. I did and also asked how I'm to get the foam foot back onto the metal tube since it looks like I'd have to take apart a couple connections to do that. Again, 2 minutes later they email back and say, "Actually, we're sending you a complete replacement rack." WHAT?? They never asked for proof of purchase, receipt, to mail back the broken one, NOTHING!! They're sending me a complete bike rack just because I sent a 5 sentence email telling them of a minor problem that really, wouldn't even render the rack unusable! If they sold cars, I'd buy one tonight. If you ever need a bike rack, this is the only company you should consider.

La instalación si es sencilla, es recomendable usar la opción de ajustarlo en la cajuela no a la defensa, si caben 3 bicicletas pero es necesario remover las llantas delanteras, si no se remueven las llantas delanteras solo caben 2 bicicletas, se siente super firme lo probamos en un trayecto de 270 km y no se sintió que se aflojara nada, fácilmente puede con las 3 bicicletas.

I bought a bike in June and that was hard enough to find, given the global bike shortage during Covid-19, but nobody local had any trunk/hatch mounted bike racks at all, and no idea when they'd be in stock again. I found this one online and for less than what I would have paid in store. It took a while to arrive (not the seller's fault - Covid has disrupted everything lately and the initial shipment estimate was accurate) but I received it yesterday and set it up with ease in minutes & was off for a ride soon after. It is very sturdy and seems good quality. Highly recommend!

The trunk mount is good but even after cleaning the trunk area before mounting the rack it still scratched it. Car is not new but still not that impressed

Very easy to put it on and off the car. So far I put 2 bikes on it. Very easy to load them. So far so good
