Can this device be used for phone lines or phone lines with DSL service?

No, the Ethernet surge suppressor has a clamping voltage rating to low to permit sucessfull use on telephone lines. This Ethernet surge suppressor will clamp ringing voltage to ground...telephones will not ring and if the line has DSL service the high frequency data signal will be interrupted during ringing and most likely cause the DSL modem to retrain.

I have one of these and it stopped working after a lightening storm. Is it defective or did it just work as planned?

Most likely it worked as planned. If it were me, I'd replace it and count myself lucky. ;-)

If i attach the ground wire to the grounding lug on the back of my ups, will that provide adequate grounding? if not, how can i ground this?

That should adequately ground the protector, as long as the ups is plugged into a grounded receptacle outlet.

Has anyone tested this to see if it can hit gigabit speeds?

Yes if everything else in the circuit can handle those speeds

Robuster Überspannungsschutz

Benutze die Geräte sowohl um die DSL-Leitung ins Haus hinein abzusichern als auch um Netzwerk in den Außenbereich (IP-Cam) gegen Überspannungen zu schützen. Beides funktioniert ohne Mangel. Dei Geräte machen einen soliden Eindruck. Wie bei allen Blitzschutz-System hofft man das man Sie niemals brauch und das sie am Tag X dann auch gut funktionieren.

Works with 2.5g!

I can't speak directly to the lighning protection as I'm not sure how I'd know, but I can say this is well built AND isn't just gigabit. Between my 2.5g capable switch and PC I'm getting full speed per iperf tests. Very excited that I'm not giving up those speeds, though I'm not sure if it will reduce maximum cable runs or whatnot.

Easy to install, no degradation in performance

I have gigabit fiber service and installed one of these between the ONT and my router. A speed test before and after showed zero degradation. The grounding wire was usefully long to attach to a grounding point. Installation was easy using my own screws. I will be installing the second protector on a long, partially outdoor run to a PoE camera.
