Indispensible, wish I'd found it earlier.
The title of this book might mislead you to think that it is going to be about how to keep your child with autism on some of those rainy days...this is far from the truth. It is an extremely well-written, readable and informative book which guides you through the maze of helping your child with autism in many different ways - sensory issues and what you can do to help, visual schedules, learning social issues, language and more. It explains why children with autism struggle and really it does the work of a shelf of books.I could not put it down and it gave me many ideas to help my son.I believe it is on the reading list for Relationship Development Intervention (a very good reading list indeed put together by the Gutsteins which can be found at their website, Connections Center.)Ellen Notbahm who is a co-author of this book also penned "10 Things your Child with Autism wishes you knew". There is a particularly good introduction to the sensory dysfunctions people with autism can struggle with.Altogether a very encouraging and helpful book well worth a look (I will not be parting with it in a hurry!)Good luck on your journey, may you find many things to help your little one cope and thrive.

Wonderful book!
Of all the books I've purchased on the subject of Autism, this one is by far the best one. I was so tired of all the clinical, academic, despairing accounts of ASD in other books, that I stopped reading any material on Autism altogether. But, this book is completely packed with not only great ideas for teaching and raising our child with ASD, but for ENJOYING our child with ASD!! Finally! The authors bring a sense of sweet humor to daily life, with a real-life sensibility that is missing from every piece of Autism literature I've seen. Instead of focusing on the "differences" we face every moment of every day, the authors just dig in and get to the business of enjoying each "challenge". For instance, the idea that "You Don't Have To Brush ALL Of Your Teeth" was so simple yet so freeing! Every idea offers several different variations, which I found to be very helpful.

Useful ideas for coing with ASDs
As a teacher of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and Sensory Integration Dysfunction (DSI), I have read nearly ever book written on the subject. Most focus on recognizing, and getting a diagnosis and treatment for, ASDs, or on games/activities. This book stands out as one of few to address COPING. It is full of small techniques and tricks to help your child/student cope with the world around him. Some are everyday routine suggestions; others are situational tricks that actually help (I've test-run many). Even if you think you know pretty much everything, there are enough fresh ideas in this book to make it worth the read. I highly recommend it to anyone who works with these special kids.
