Avengers Epic Collection: The Gatherers Strike!
C**O

The Main Series is Great, the Miniseries... Less So
The latest Avengers Epic takes us up to 1994 and follows up directly from the already-released Fear the Reaper. The issues from the main title are great - it's a shame there are only seven of them. As the title suggests, they are occupied with the mysterious Gatherers, a group of dimension travelers with a hatred for the Avengers and some extreme power behind them. It's a great storyline that also takes in the increasing instability of Sersi and some nice moments for the Vision, although you'll have to wait for an eventual volume 25 for the conclusion. Still, it's all good stuff from Bob Harras and Steve Epting. As to the other contents of the 488-page volume, we have an annual which features a fairly unimpressive new villain/antihero in Bloodwraith. However, it looks positively inspired next to the Terminatrix Objective miniseries. Following current time-conquerer Ravonna as she manipulates a bunch of Avengers into helping her cause, it's a real mess of bland art, weak battles and terrible plotting. It is, of course, part of the Epic Collection ethos of completeness for such works to be included, but it really pales next to what was going on in the main book at the time.We also have the Strikefile issue, which is basically a text recap of the recent Operation Galactic Storm, and the Anniversary Magazine, which at least contains a bunch of interesting interviews and tidbits like the full Avengers Charter. In terms of volume, then, probably more bleh than yeah in this particular volume, which is a shame; one for completists following the entire run only, I think.
