Great film - but this seller does not reveal that the disc does not play in U.S. dvd players. 😕
I saw this movie at a theater in Great Britain 40 years ago — and loved it ! Don’t really “get” the poor reviews I’ve seen for it here. Still looking for it to be released on DVD in my region, however, as the copy I purchased from Amazon recently did not indicate in the description that it was not compatible with US dvd players. Tisk, tisk ! One day my patience will be rewarded, I trust !

This film raises moral qusestions
The "limit" in this film's title may refer to the limits of morality, for this is a theme of the film, based on a book by Graham Greene. An exiled Paraguayan physician, Richard Greer, who is half English, is living and practicing medicine in Argentina. His father, as far as he knows, is still in Paraguay, and he is trying to find out how he is. He sees a beautiful prostitute in a whore house, is attracted to her, goes toward her to bed her, but another man beats him to her and takes her to a room. He goes back to find her, but learns that she gave up her profession. He sees her in a optical shop, approaches her, talks to her, buys her a pair of glasses, takes her to his apartment, sleeps with her, and asks her name when she is leaving. He discovers that she is the wife of a boozing "honorary consul" of England, Michael Cain. Greer establishes a very friendly relationship with the honorary consul and the two like each other. He meets with his wife frequently and she is soon pregnant with his baby. Paraguayan rebels kidnap the honoree consul thinking that he is a visiting American Ambassador, and wound him in the leg. They ask for Greer's help. They lead him on by saying they want to help him get information about his father, and do not reveal that his father is dead. Neither England nor America wants to help the honorary consul because as he says, "They will be quite delighted to get me out of their hands at last." The corrupt Argentinean police do come to his rescue with devastating results. The film raises moral questions. Should Greer have respected his friendship with Cain, as Cain says to him when he finds out about the adultery, and not bedded his wife? Should Greer have continued having sex with Cain's wife when he did not love her? Did England and America act properly when they did not help Cain because he over-indulges in drinking alcohol? Was the brutal manner in which the Argentinean police acted against the rebels moral? Was Cain a moral man and did he act morally at the end of the film, or was he just a fool?

A very good film with the legendary Sir Michael Caine
**THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**The Honorary Consul is a 1983 British drama film directed by John Mackenzie and starring Michael Caine, Richard Gere, Bob Hoskins and Elpidia Carrillo. It is based on the novel The Honorary Consul by Graham Greene. It was also released under the title Beyond the Limit. The screenplay was written by Christopher Hampton.Set in a small politically unstable Latin American country, the story follows the half English and half Latino Dr. Eduardo Plarr (Richard Gere), who left his home to find a better life. Along the way he meets an array of people, including British Consul Charley Fortnum (Michael Caine), a representative in Latin America who is trying to keep revolution from occurring. He is also a remorseful alcoholic. Another person the doctor meets is Clara (Elpidia Carrillo), whom he immediately falls in love with, but there is a problem: Clara is Charley's wife. The film was produced by Norma Heyman, marking the first time that a British woman entirely produced an independent feature film in history. The film did good business in Europe, and particularly in England as it was a British production. In the United States, however, it only earned about $6 million in box office receipts and was not well-received by critics.Although I have never read the novel or indeed any of Graham Greene's other novels, I thought The Honorary Consul was quite entertaining a story despite not having seen the film before. I very highly recommend this film as I believe it to be a worthy part of anyone's film collection.(Note: the DVD for The Honorary Consul is a German release. When the menu for the film comes up, make sure you look out for the word "Tonformat" on the menu when you want to change the audio setup to English before you start watching the film).

ENJOYABLE POLITICAL ACTION DRAMA
I saw this film when it was first released in 1984. Enjoyed seeing it again. Great performances from Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins, not so great from Richard Gere but a good supporting cast make this an enjoyable hour and three quarters entertainment. Directed by John Mackenzie (The Long Good Friday). Good price form AMAZON too.
