what makes them want to pick a chore? what's the motivation?

Chore Sticks use intermittent rewards to motivate kids to come back to see what's next. The vast majority of chores in the tube are real jobs that need done but about 10% are fun sticks like "read one book" or "do 10 jumping jacks". Not knowing what the next stick is makes kids want to come back to see what's next. Similar to seeing half of a movie and shutting it off; you have to see how it ends. We most often hear "these things are like magic". We hope they can work for you too!

can you just get blank sticks?

The set came with some blank. But mostly were prefilled.

Does the ink bleed when you write on the sticks?

We have not had a problem with Ink bleeding on the sticks.
