Where is the volume located and how does it work?

You will have to set-up where you want sound to come from (your computer speakers or the Asus) in your computer sound settings. Then your computer volume buttons will control the sound. However, if you tap the second button from the left and navigate to menu, then go down to the wrench icon (system setup) the volume setting is there.
