Yes, you should be able to use any 0.5mm lead. I've already reloaded my pencil with spare lead I bought.

What is the difference between kurutoga advance upgrade model and kurutoga standard model?

Standard Kuru Toga pencils rotate the lead once every 40 strokes, while the Kuru Toga Advance rotates the lead once every 20 strokes. The Advance's mechanism is made with metal parts for smoother, more reliable performance.

Can you see the rotation through the grip holes?

No, but if you remove the tip and the external bezel, you can see the whole mechanism in a transparent plastic tube (It is really nice). Then there you can note the mechanism moving while you use it.
