Indispensable!
Can't believe I was lucky enough to find this just before our trip! Took beautiful routes we would never have tried. Learned so much about where we were, what we saw. Fabulous dining recommendations, from simple charming local hangouts to five stars! SO grateful. Can't wait to get on the road with it again!!

Small hard to read
Wish it was in a magazine style. Would be a lot easier to read

Good suggestions, kind of hard to follow.
Recently used this book on a journey down the "Great River Road" portion from this book.It has some good suggestions of places to stop off, however, it is written in a way that is kind of hard to follow and jumps around a bit.It would be better if it would be written in a way that states a city or area, describes it and then bullet points attractions, food, lodging, etc.. Instead it is all in full paragraph form and you have to kind of dig through the writing to find where things are at and what they are called.

Excellent premise, beautifully executed
There should be no question what this book is all about. It's about packing up, getting in the car and... AVOIDING THE AIRPORT! Doesn't that just immediately relieve the tension? These are not just any old road trips. These are THE road trips, the historic, grand road trips we read about in historic novels and see in historic films. All this sounds nice, right? It's a good idea, but Moon has put together a really cracking guide dedicated to this modest form of travel in the USA (and some feature parts of Canada). It's not all roadside kitsch, though those things do get mentioned. The feature attractions along these beautiful roads get appropriate attention, from important national parks to cultural sights to some noteworthy suggestions for dining and lodging. Something I found just top notch is the various mentions of both major AND minor league baseball clubs. That's really fun. Historic amusement parks get featured too.Listings are not the feature here, so don't expect long lists of restaurants and hotels. There are a few, but certainly nothing comprehensive. Also, the book features historic roadways and does NOT expect you to travel extensive miles on interstate highways. These are slow roads for frequent stops and exploring.I would recommend this excellent book to anyone looking to gather the motivation and enthusiasm for an American road trip, be it in a car, on a motorcycle, or in an RV.

Good information, small size (maybe too small?)
As I expected, this book provides a good overview of some delightful long-distance routes crisscrossing the US. There is way more information available than can be presented in 500+ pages so I don’t fault the author for omitting something I might consider worth highlighting. We will be doing three long trips in the next 18 months (6,000; 5,500; 12,000 miles) and this will be helpful in planning. The shortcomings are few but noteworthy in my opinion. First, I would have gladly paid another $10 for a larger format with a “softer” binding. With this format the text is small and the physical size makes it difficult to keep open and impossible to do so without a holder or a weight. That makes use with a computer for route planning more difficult. Second - more maps please even if you would like to sell me more stuff. Some additional maps would be welcome and easier to do in a larger format. I suppose I’ll invest in a few additional items - it’s not that much more for major trip planning.A lot of effort went into creating this guide and with a few changes (mostly physical in nature) it would go from good/very good to great. Still, worth the purchase price IMHO.

Useful planning tool
Using this for planning a cross country trip. It’s a great starting point for deciding a route. It’s not a road atlas, and it’s not a substitute for doing the legwork of planning. It’s an excellent resource for planning your own adventure, and it’s very useful for deciding where to plan on stopping, spending some time, and there’s a variety of points of interest all along the routes. If you’re looking for someone to tell you how and where to go, this is probably not for you. If you like to choose your own adventure, this book is perfect!

Perfect!
Have used this now for several trips - Route 66, Great Northern, Oregon Trail, Appalachian Parkway. It's been perfect and a great replacement for the old AAA TripTiks.

Cant recomend this book highly enough!
I've followed three of the routes from this book on a Harley Davidson and had found it to be absolutely brilliant for road trips. It doesn't give turn by turn instructions for use as you drive. Rather it paints a picture of the route and gives the feel for the area as well as things to see and places to eat and stay. If you're the kind of person who likes to sit down with the internet and a map to plan a road trip you’ll find Road Trip USA inspirational!
