The display shows tenths of a gram; but your questions was about precision or actually accuracy? - on the back of the box it states accuracy is 0.4g

Can this scale be calibrated and with what weight amount?

I believe you can use a 100g weight or a 500g weight.

For my scale to calibrate with 100g weight: 
With the scale on, Hold M for 5 seconds 
When CAL blinks press M once more 
100g flashes on the display and you are ready to place the weight on the scale.

For a 500g weight: 
With the scale off, Press and hold POWER + M for 5 seconds. 
The scale will display CAL then show a bunch of numbers 
Press M again and it will read 500g. It is now ready to calibrate with a 500g weight.

Can I use this straight out of the box or does it need calibration before use?

The scale works straight from box after you install the batteries. The scale working and the scale being calibrated are two different things. I verified my scale using a set of check weights. I only need to weigh a maximum of 200 grams, so that's as high as I checked. The scale checked good at the 8 weights I checked against.

Question 4

The box says this scale has auto calibration. If this is true, why does it have a calibration mode that requires a 2000 g calibration weight?

Mine was off by 0.8 g at 1 kg when I got it.  I calibrated it and now it's dead on.  Turn the scale on with nothing on it.  Wait for it to stabilize.  Press and hold the M button until it displays CAL.  Press M again and it will display 100.  It's possible different versions use different weights, so use the weight indicated in the display.  Gently place your calibration weight on the center of the platform and wait for the scale to say PASS.
