Good Words, Okay Pictures
Ever look at "Shutterbug" or "Popular Photography" magazines? They have some okay articles, tips, and product placement, but you can't find good photos in them, even on their covers. This is a book series with a similar problem. Grey is a good writer; funny, easy to read, and his tips are useful. But his example photos, as shown in print at least, aren't inspiring. Once in a while he has a shot worth emulating. More often, you find yourself wondering how you might use the techniques he describes to get a good result because he doesn't show one. I often found myself thinking, "I'm supposed to set up a bunch of lights to wind up with stuff like this?"Even worse is the immodesty. At one point he shows an overlit portrait of a model in a flapper-girl outfit seated in a wooden pose with a vacant expression like a mannequin. The text assures us "the shot is "smokin' hot!" In the very next example he describes a bland, shopping-mall-studio-type photo as "subtle yet beautiful," right under the photo. I mean, seeing as how the picture's right there, you'd think it would be redundant to tell us it's beautiful (that is, unless it isn't). And if it's subtle, then pointing it out kinda kills the subtlety. I guess it's possible that bragging is part of his humor, which, like I say, is otherwise engaging.Anyway, if you're looking for lighting tips that seem sensible but aren't borne out by the illustrations, this is a good source. You'll learn stuff and it's worth the price. Just don't expect a lot of inspiration to go with the instruction.

Another Great Book
After reading Christopher Grey's Lighting Techniques I was inspired to learn more, so I read his Advanced Lighting Techniques. He did another amazing job in explaining step by step how to achieve the final image, including lots of great tips and different lighting equipment for both in the studio and for on location portraits. Definitely a great book to have and refer back to time and time again, and would recommend it to any photographer looking to take their lighting to the next level.

A great introduction to lighting tricks - beyond the bare basics!
This is an excellent book to get you thinking about where to take your basic lighting techniques and improve on them. This will help to add a little drama to your studio portraits and teach you to experiment with your basic lighting kit. I also think it's helpful in that it incorporates a bit of Photo-shopping to show you how to manipulate your studio work for optimum performance. Great little book!

A great tool for all photographers
As an Advertising Creative Director over the last 28 years and amateur photographer myself, I have learned much from Chris's books, and in person. After shooting literally dozens of professional photoshoots in his studio and on location, I'm always amazed at the tricks and tools Chris uses to capture images. And after witnessing each one, I always say, "I should write that down". Well, now I don't have too. Chris has done it for you. A great book, in a easygoing and easy to understand manner, with an occasional quip of humor.

Beneficial to any photographer
An excellent book geared toward breaking away from the usual lighting practices to more complex and sophisticated lighting techniques. Christopher Grey lives up to his reputation as a world class photographer and best selling author as he shares techniques and insight to produce amazing results. Another appealing quality of the methods explained is that they are not at all difficult to employ. This must have is an easy benefit to all photographers.
