Take an old iPod with a 40GB HDD and customize it ..
I took my trusted old 40GB iPod from 2004, 4th gen with the monochrome screen and installed a new battery, replaced the spinning drive with this adapter plus a CF card adapter to accomodate an SD card adapter that holds a 128GB microSD card. Now I have a very light 128GB (119 GB formatted capacity) iPod with fantastic sound, having my entire CD library in Apple Lossless format (so much better than MP3 or AAC that top out at 320kbit/sec) on the little thing.I tested with 256GB SD cards first, but they seem to large for this generation iPod, it refuses to recognize more than 8GB out of those.See before and after photos.

The adapter would work fine with the IPOD shell open
Bought this to put a compact flash card in an IPOD Photo. I didn't figure it out until it was too late, but the adapter they sent me did not have any of the leads on the bottom side soldered to the actual board. They were soldered on the top, and the photos of this item posted here lead me to believe they were supposed to be soldered to the bottom as well, but mine weren't. I assume this was a manufacturing error. The adapter would work fine with the IPOD shell open, but the moment I closed it, one of the leads on the bottom would bend slightly due to the shifting inside the case and the hard drive would disconnect. I severely damaged my IPOD trying to determine what the problem was, and I had to replace multiple parts (ribbon cables) in it as a result. Beware if you're looking to buy this off amazon.

Not the easiest project, not plug-and-play, and requires attention to detail. Be mindful when modding and it should work fine.
This does have the long through-hole leads that the other reviewer mentioned. It didn't end up being as destructive in my case, because I knew about it ahead of time thanks to that helpful review, and just filed off the extra length from those leads. I am using this in a Gigabeat F40, which has an exposed circuit board underneath (above?) the harddrive space. This makes even filed-down leads insufficient, so I put a layer of clear epoxy over as much of it as possible. I couldn't (or maybe shouldn't) do that for the jumper, but it shouldn't matter because that side faces away from the circuit board. This might not be necessary because filling the space around the CF Card + Adapter should provide a gap between these things, but I am a careful person that enjoys overkill. I used mounting putty to fill the space around it and cushion it so it doesn't bang around while I handle the device. I needed to dremel off the black plastic tabs on the side of the connector so that the locating pins on the Gigabeat's connector wouldn't interfere and prevent mating. With tabs all good to go, the connector still wouldn't go in all the way, but it was close enough and it works. So it worked out well and I now have a Gigabeat F40 that no longer makes scary clicking noises and runs fine. For the success I give it a high rating, but the potential damage that could be caused by untrimmed leads loses it a star. If the manufacturer wanted to go above and beyond, they would find some way to prevent any traces, leads, or contacts from contacting adjacent parts.
